I googled how to make your own deodorant. One result was baking soda+ water, another was simply lemon juice. I tried baking soda+ lemon juice (directly from a lemon), then baking soda + water. Each time, my concoction would clump and fall off of my skin within minutes. Does anyone have any idea how to make it stay on?

Using baking soda doesn't sound like a good idea, it is mildly alkaline and would likely cause skin irritation after repeated use as it will tend to damage the skin and remove the natural oils from it too. If mixed with lemon juice it would form sodium citrate but the proportions used would determine if the final product was acidic, alkaline or neutral. There must be better alternatives? Don't trust everything you read on the internet.

Just out of interest, why do you want to do this? I have to admit I hate the smell of most deodorants. To me they smell worse than what they are trying to cover up. I did eventually find a brand of unperfumed deodorant which is what I now use.

I've tried a lot of home-made deodorants, and they all had some kind of drawback, like staining, clumping, and rashes.

I've had to just make sure to use unscented, gel-based products - the kind you can see through - and keep plenty of them on hand.

I like Teen Spirit. Smells like strawberries. I've been having an increasingly harder time finding it in stores, though.

If you get really good at making deodorant, you could make interesting scented deos, like cinnabun, or oatmeal cookies, or tangy lemon!

I am trying to make my own deodorant because most regular deodorants contain aluminum, and I don't trust "all-natural" commercial deodorants.

What's wrong with putting aluminum on your skin? You can wrap your food in aluminum foil and nothing bad happens to it.

It has been linked to causing breast cancer, though I'm not sure how true that is.

I've always wanted to learn to make my own deodorant, but I'm afraid that I'm going to screw it up.

Exactly, and I have read that this can cause breast cancer in some cases.

Don't the mistake of mixing up "antiperspirant" with "deodorant"- they are completely different products. Most antiperspirants contain aluminum, many deodorants don't. Due to skin allergies, I can't use antiperspirants so I use deodorants that do not contain aluminum.

I've worried about the use of aluminum products and its association with things like alzheimer's. Also, the use of plastics and foams in the microwave is something I try to avoid because I don't see them as being inert. Probably just paranoia, but I tend to try to avoid their long term use when I can.

Deodorant instead of anti-perspirant, unless I am doing something like public speaking, and really there is nothing wrong with washing under your arms more than once a day if you can. I really like getting sweaty when I work out so I usually jump in and out of the shower often.
