Las Vegas for 40th Birthday

Ok, I realize that the topic has nothing to do with AS....or does it. I am going by myself because I don't have any friends, which my colleauges at work find a litle odd but which I love. I can handle all the lights and crazy activity...mitigated by my blood alcohol level or course. I am a people watcher; I love airports. I wonder if I will get in to the situation where I will have a woman approach me for conversation. Sounds exciting...on the other hand terrifying, because I tendto embarrass myself during conversation when I don't know the other person well. Especially any kind of romantically charged thing. I'll say or do something weird and she'll leave me alone. I am always distracted by the fact that I am certain that I am not responding correctly to cues given. Again, I could mitigate that with alcohol. But it's not too important anyway. I am there to enjoy myself and getting caught up in all that would certainly detract from my enjoyment.
Anywho, I would enjoy hearing any thoughts, feelings, tips, whatever on going to Vegas! Has anyone here actually gone before? this is my first time.

Technically I might want to go sometime but if I go someplace I tend to rarely get out of the vehicle. I have been to Vegas every year when I was younger with family, but my memory's of it are mostly of objects on walls, ceilings, and platforms... building lines, thinking about the mechanism in that moving leg they have. Most of your people, places, and things, are lost in my experience. If you go for this aspect I truly salute you.

I would not be scared and want to go, or enjoy myself and go. Nor would I not want to go because it would be too much. I would simply go to see something interesting, much like getting online and reading wikipedia.

I'd much rather go to Glacier Park, or go see sand dunes, or take my camera and get some shots of the ocean.

Well, each to their own.

To my eyes Las Vegas looks to be the vilest, most phoney, tacky, cheap, nasty, gaudy, boring and uncultured city on the face of the planet.

Las Vegas is the last place on the planet I'd want to visit.

I went with out-of-town guests last summer, it's certainly an interesting place, both aesthetically and anthropologically - but to say it's "sensory overload" would be a gross understatement...

I would never go there of my own volition, but I do like visiting the pet stores (you can buy just about any animal you can think of in Nevada) and I do intend to visit the Atomic Testing Museum next time I'm in the area.

Either way, you should do something memorable for your 40th - Vegas or otherwise - have fun!

I've been to Vegas several times as a < adult (although "child" doesn't seem like the right word) with my mother, sister, and usually some friends. Its a nice place, I enjoyed myself. I like the lights and the themed casinos, the restaurants, and the amusement rides. There's plenty of dirty deeds going on, to be sure but other people's debauchery does not bother me and there is also plenty of sober, sexless entertainment to be had. I'm not sure whether or not I'd like it as an adult, though because it would be more stressful have to be in charge and "on the watch" than to follow my mom around and let her handle the planning and whatnot.

My husband is not at all interested in visiting Vegas, though, due to watching too much CSI.

If you can navigate it you'll have fun. My brother lives in vegas and loves it but then he is on all the time. My other sibs love it and as my one sister always says when we join up with her "Are you guys ready to party?" I mostly just hang out with them and don't get crazy but what's cool is they just let me be me.

I went for my dads 40th bday 2 years ago. I was too young to do anything at the time which was a bummer. Though my dad got disapeared by david copperfield on his bday so that was cool

I'd rather spend my 40th Birthday in London.

This will be the only time I reveal my location... but as a lifetime resident, that hits beyond just how you feel about vegas as a tourist attraction but also expresses really mean things about my home.

While perhaps there is lots of opportunity to indulge in most of those things if you look often modern work done with casino's don't even fit those very very mean things that you say...

The one the hurts the most is "uncultured"... just because there are entertainment sections to the town, and the strip really is focused on the tourists that does not mean that there aren't real people who live and operate in a honest way just like any other city in the country. We have museums that tell our history, there is a large art community just south of down town that has monthly art and performance festivals, some of the great companies of the US have set up shop in town because of the tax benefits and many of the people are very good people.

I understand that you said that it is that way from your eyes, and I respect your right to have an uneducated opinion but it just seems harsh to judge without really knowing what goes on in this town.

however, as a local and a native from the town: I will agree that it is sensory overload.

You can do Vegas without too much crowds but its difficult to do. I would say expect it to be about equally difficult to doing Disney Land... if you can handle Disney, then you could handle LV...

For me I stay away from the strip.

Thanks. Like I said I deal with the sensory overload as long as I can retreat to my room/drink. I never go on vacations, so this is actually my first. I wanted to go to Grand Cayman, but I was having trouble getting my passport. I was in the Air Force in the 90's stationed in Germany so I was able to see a lot of Europe while I was there. My dream vacation is Bora Bora in Tahiti!

My recommendations for places to stay:

If you have the cash for expensive rooms go with Cosmopolitan or Aria (newer casinos that come well recommended by locals who have tried the hotels at them out)

While Excalibur is fun to visit, I wouldn't recommend staying there

If you want slightly off-strip the Silverton has some of the most comfy rooms in town (I personally have stayed there a few times for staycations)

If you want way off-strip and dont mind an extra 30 minute drive to the action... check out "red rock station" a definite locals favorite

If you want cheap, pick something downtown... The Plaza just remodeled and re-opened so they are probably a pretty great option

If you can drive, and rent a car, make a trip to the grocery store to keep booze and mixer in your room since mini-bars can get expensive, and generally are limitedly stocked.

I already have reservations at NewYork. Definitely getting liquor from the store and not the hotel room service. It's a $10 delivery charge on top of what you order! I'll have to see how it goes. I was gonna stay downtown at first, but I figured I would do the strip on my first go. Next time probably stay of Fremont.

Nice! I have to imagine prices are moderate there and the rooms are probably pretty decent.
