I know everyone here has their own rituals they must do when preparing for bed. What's yours? Can you only sleep on one side? Does the room need to be dark or light? Radio/TV playing in the background?

Mine:
1) I have to sleep on the right side of the bed, even if I'm alone, and I've found that I need to put my right arm under my pillow and reach up and grab one of the vertical rails of the headboard. (If I wake up during the night, I can fall back asleep without grabbing the headboard, but not for the initial fade-out.) I do have problems sometimes falling asleep if I'm traveling and have to stay in a hotel bed with a solid wood headboard.
2) The sheets HAVE to be tucked in at the bottom. It's the barrier that prevents the boogeyman from reaching up from under the bed and pulling off my big toe. (Yeah, I have this phobia about anyone touching my toes...especially my big toes. I'm not sure where I got this one, I'm sure it's probably some traumatic experience as a child that I never quite got over. It never ceases to amuse my wife, though she does respect it by regarding my toes as completely off-limits at all times.)
3) I prefer absolute darkness, and either no sounds or very soft new-age/relaxation music.

My routine is a bit off now as I quit smoking 7 months ago - I used to have two smokes before bed, with a cup of tea, not now :)

I have a habit when I take my pills before bed of using my purple mug, I have to have just the right number of gulps of water, no specific number but if it doesn't feel like the right amount I have to refill the mug again. Cats get kissed...yes, I'm becoming a crazy cat lady. If on my own then I sleep on the right side of the bed and on my right side, if boyfriend is here I sleep on the left side of the bed and on my left side.

My bedroom is pretty much a bed in a room, not even a carpet, so no light or TV/radio playing, I make sure all doors closed, all curtains/blinds drawn, and black-out blind in my room so as much darkness as possible...which REALLY isn't much in my flat when I don't sleep till morning. I've never been one to do anything but sleep in bed, well and some other things, and I don't ever stay in bed in the morning, if I'm not sleeping I'm not in bed and not in that room...perfect for sleeping then.

You know what? It's 7am, I was going to stay up all day so I could go to bed early tomorrow night (tonight?) to get up early the following morning...but this post has made me want my bed.

Most of my sleeping habits are fairly average, but there are two strange things I must do in order to sleep at night:

- I have to have all of my "special" items with me - my Special Pillow, which is actually a purple-colored cylindrical sack of beads, my other Special Pillow, which is a small, red, velvety, square-shaped pillow, my Special Blanket which is a throw blanket which was given to me as a gift for Christmas one year, and Mr. igloo the Teddy Bear, which was given to me by my Nana last year in April.

- I have to watch TV or a movie. I don't know why this is, but for some reason I have a much more difficult time falling asleep if I don't do this, even if it's only for a few minutes. Some scientific studies state that watching television while in bed stimulates the mind by tricking it into thinking it's daylight outside, but this is not the case for me. TV is very relaxing to me, and there have been numerous occasions where I have fallen asleep with the television on.

I can never fall asleep at the same time but I wake up around 5:11 on school days and 8:30 on weekends.
I have to have been on youtube before I can sleep. It helps if I replay a song in my head before I zone out.

I'm a nightowl, so I don't mind sleeping when it's light out. (In fact, I prefer it.)

I sleep to the sound of ocean waves or airplane white noise most of the time.

I have no problem sleeping through the sounds of running dishwashers, vacuuming, hammering, etc. if my husband is making the noise, but if the dog's nails click on the floor, my husband whispers my name, or the phone rings, I'm instantly awake.

I prefer it when my side of the bed is "messy" like a nest, so I mess it up before I get to bed.

-I sleep with two pillows: one at my head and one to the side for hugging. I used to have three (one on each side) and maybe I'll take that up again some time. I can make do with one pillow when not sleeping at home.

-I cannot sleep against a wall because I get claustrophobic.

-I cannot sleep in clothes which become easily twisted or while wearing socks.

-I must have something on top of me, preferably a blanket (and the heavier, the better), but I can sometimes sleep with only a sheet if it's incredibly hot.

-When it's hot, I have to be able to stick one of my feet out from under the blanket or sheet.

-Aside from a slight preference for falling asleep while half on my side/half on my stomach, I really have no preferred sleeping position. I sleep on my side, on my stomach, on my back, curled up in a little ball, etc.

I have to sleep with something heavy resting on top of my feet. This is usually either a few pillows or a particularly heavy quilt, which I now use. This makes falling asleep in hotels an especially laborious process because I just don't feel right without that comforting weight. I've just slept this way since early childhood.

I have to have every light out in the room, and I block out the windows with heavy curtains and blinds. My friends love to joke and call me a vampire because I normally don't sleep until early morning, normally about the time that dawn is breaking. I'm an extreme night owl, and I love to sleep a lot, whether it's a cat nap in the afternoon or a 10-hour slumber fest.

Everything absolutely has to be quiet or I can't go to sleep. The slightest sounds will wake me up: the air conditioning coming on, cars outside, the cat running around the apartment, etc.

Normally I make a strong herbal tea to help me sleep, because I struggle with insomnia a lot. There's just something about the night that begs me not to miss it.

I am incapable of sleeping in an un-mussed bed, and I normally go to sleep on my stomach and wake up on my back.

I sleep wearing an old Kinks T-shirt and the first set of drum sticks that I bought myself in the late November of 2009. I feel very nostalgic. :)

My sleeping rituals aren't "unusual": go upstairs, turn on bedroom light, change into more comfortable clothing (usually a T-shirt and pajama pants), brush teeth, read (optional), listen to music (optional), sleep.
However, my sleeping schedule (as in the sleeping patterns controlled by circadian rhythms) is naturally extremely messed up. Without Benadryl, melatonin supplements, and Trazadone, there is no way I can possibly sleep even a wink at night. Naturally, I can go a few days without sleep. Only problem is the fact that it's hard to wake up in the morning because, about 60% of the time, I take the medicine a bit later than I should and therefore it is still in my system and telling my body to continue sleeping while, really, it is time to wake up.

I sleep only on the left side of my bed despite having an entire queen size to myself. It has one of those memory foam toppers so the poor left is laden with memory indeed. I keep meaning to flip it 180 degrees, but dem suckers are heavy!

I have to drink a small glass of water before climbing into bed. And despite using the same glass every night, I have to count each night the number of gulps. It has been 8 lately.

I sleep with a blanket whether it's hot or cold and my toes have to be under the blanket.

I sleep on my tummy when I go to sleep. I have a pillow for my head, a pillow to hug and another pillow to lean on. In Winter, I like tucking the doona under my feet to stop the cold air coming in. I also feel more secure that way. When there is anxiety, I also sleep while holding onto the rails of the metal bed head. Apparently I look like I am holding on for dear life. I imagine that I look like one of those passengers in the Titanic movie.

I always have to blast music really loud. And turn on my background noise maker. And cuddle with my sock monkey Rico. :3

i need the room to be pitch black- the curtains being down isnt enough; it needs to be darker than dark. unforunately i can never achieve this and my sister is in the same room and she likes the curtains up.
i also need it to be dead quiet. it never is- i can hear my sister breathing from the other room and my dad doesnt let me shut the bedroom door because he needs to know what we are doing all the time.
i sleep under the covers on my belly and have done since i was six because i was scared the ghosts would find me. now it is more comfort and to block out any light and noise. breathing isnt an issue.
