Sorry to correct you Tim,but the study of
names is one of my pet subjects and I'm
sure Is= Ice in Icelandic so it's meaning is
just as we hear it in English.It's true that the
island isn't 'Icy' these days but it may well
have been when it was named 1000 years
ago.It's not exactly tropical now.
I also heard the story that UtukXul mentioned about it being something of a misnomer,the idea apparently being to attract settlers to Greenland instead.I'm not as sure about that story as I am about the Is=Ice.
