I'm American so my accent would sound uncool no matter where I went in England.

It's the "aspie accent"--many of us don't identify with the herd and pick up the local accent, but strive to speak "correctly". A lot of being percieved as "posh" is vocabulary choice. Our tendency to use big words and archaic constructions is what they mean by "pedantic speech" in some diagnostic descriptions of AS.

American accents aren't so bad. There are some variations on the southern accent that are particularly nice.

There are some great American accents and a lot of brits who can barely speak intelligible English. Not always so great.
