Is it just me or is it when I buy a new shirt it has a very nice, wonderful smell? I especially notice at big namebrand stores like AE and A&F. Does anyone here work in retail and know if there's something they spray the wardrobes with to give them a new smell or is it simply the fact they are new?

I LOVE new-clothes smell. :D Once I googled "new clothes smell" and someone said that it was from all these toxic chemicals, but surely there's a way to make a detergent that imparts new-clothes smell to old clothes. I mean, if they can make detergent smell like a meadow, why not? I'd buy it in a second!

But as for the stores, I think it's just because they're new. I used to work in a clothes store for a while and we never sprayed the clothes with anything.

They are sprayed with insecticides and brominated fire retardants prior to shipping.... Sorry. The same stuff they use in soda to keep the ingredients from separating.

It's one of the reasons I refuse to wear new clothes out of the store... I have to bring them home and put them through the wash before I'll feel comfortable wearing them.
