American date format question

I know that Americans write the date different to the rest of the world i.e. mm/dd/yyyy rather than dd/mm/yyyy, but how do you write dates using text rather than numbers and what punctuation is considered correct grammar? Which of these is correct in American English usage:

Thursday, July 5 2012

or

Thursday, 5 July 2012

or something else?

I do dates however I feel like and I'm a native United Statsian. Pretty much the only thing that stays the same every time I write a date is that the year comes last. Maybe I'll switch that up next time.

Some software I'm working on. It needs to display dates in various international formats and I want to be sure I've got the American formats correct.
