The text reads Смерть всім, хто стоїть на перешкоді здобуття вільності трудовому люду. More specifically, "Death to all who stand in the way of freedom for a working people!" in Ukrainian. It was the chosen banner of the Anarcho-Communist Makhnovistas, the Free Territory, and the Revolutionary Insurrectionary Army of Ukraine, or as it was also called, the Black Army.

Similar flags were also used by other Eastern European revolutionaries, such as these revolutionary Russian sailors in Finland, 1917. Text reads "Death to the petty bourgeoise".

Interestingly enough, the black flag of Makhno is also reported to have been hoisted over the GULAG labor camp known as Norilsk, during a major prison uprising in 1953 following Stalin's death.
