I like collecting things as its a enjoyable and (usually) relaxing pastime for me. Some things I have collected for years and have been a consistant interest, while others are experiments or maybe even temporary, just to have something to collect. Along with some main collections that generally cost money to add to (which often means delays), I also look for some relatively inexpensive ones to fill the gaps. Quite a few are collections I started with my kids and continue sometimes although they are not into it at this time. They might get back into it later, or not. It kind of doesn't matter, as they will be there if they want it, or can be liquidated if not. I enjoy it on my own anyway.
The main ones so far have been:
- Toy soldiers of various periods, kind of divided into sub-collections. There is a medieval group, a Lord of the Rings group, a American Civil War group etc. I collect the better quality plastic kind that were actually made as toys and not the metal 'collectors items'. I have a good estimate of having put about 27k into this collection over the years, but became a part time seller to fund it and am basically even now, or a little ahead.
- Lion King Cards. I started this back when with my daughter and had no idea what it would eventually become (or what it would cost ). Anyway, it is now basically every Lion King card ever made anywhere, and because its a popular theme, new ones are made, if not only in a Lion King set, at least as part of some Disney themed set. It also branched out to include the collectible sticker series made by Panini. Some favorites are some small promotion sets made in far flung corners like Australia, Thailand, Argentina, etc. (Well... far flung from me. ). My most favorite group are cards signed by the voice actors, which I have sent to their agents. It can take quite a long time to get them back (one took 2 full years! ) but you will almost always get them back eventually. Tracking down the smaller part actors and actresses can be difficult, but is part of the fun I guess. The hunt. Once in a while you can tell you get their actual signature with a note (I include a note to the voice actor) but most times what you get is what is known as an 'Auto Pen' or 'Secretarial' signature which is done by a machine or secretary. Even so I still like them.
Other lesser interest ones are:
American Stamps (used)
Foreign Coins and Paper money
Legos (Bionicle, Castle, Star Wars and Adventure Series)
Playmobil (Castle and Dollhouse series)
Littlest Pet Shop
Fast Food Premiums (just a few selected subjects)
Really old Artifacts (a few coins, arrowheads, bullets, grinding stones, pottery shards, fossils, etc)
