Why is there so much sexism/gender inequality in the world?

Take a look at most world cultures and see how females always seem to be denied many of the freedoms which males enjoy. I think this occurs in America and most other places. John Lennon made a song called "Woman is The N***** of The World". The lyrics are sad but true.

I've listened to that song many times. It seems that men can do anything they want, while women have to look and be a certain way. Men are also still getting payed more than women are. Men can be any size and wear anything they want. Women have to be under a size 10 and they have to wear restrictive clothing that fit closely to their bodies, because the media tells them to. When a husband and his wife get married, the wife has to give up her last name. Women still feel the need to paint their faces after many years, decades and centuries. Just look at the commercials that exploit gender roles. No wonder I don't watch TV.

It seems like it's been this way for most of history........... it's just sickening, IMO. I treat women like they are equal to us.

You are right gender roles are unpleasant for everyone. I can't get a job with long hair, apparently it means I'm lazy. girls aren't interested in a guy who's a femmy b***h like me. Apparently I have to follow the guide line of being a male and follow all the pointless tropes other wise I'm a flaming homo. some people assumed I was in the closet just because I was comfortable embracing a close friend with a hug.
the women doesn't have to give up her last name my sister uses both. men get screwed over hard in divorces. there's all kind of inequalities its not limited to just women.

Sextaesada makes a good point. Gender roles affect both men and women.

It stems from the physiological and psychological differences. Males tend to be physically stronger and suited to hunting in ancient times, while females are weaker and suited to more delicate work like foraging and caring for babies. It's evolutionarily advantageous... in a primitive society. So the men tend to get cocky because since the dawn of mankind, they've been bringing home the bacon.

As far as inequality, that has been the rule for most people for most of history. If you were an average guy the usual arrangement would be Ghengis Khan and his band of thugs take your stuff (which includes your wife and daughters) whenever they come around. Or, the King and his cronies get to impregnate your wife on your wedding day, and if you get uppity about it then they'll kill you or worse.

That's not to say that women being one step even lower than that is insignificant, but inequality is just something that human societies do. Unfortunately, those with the least hesitation to rule through violence, brutality, and killing have historically done well. I read somewhere that GK currently has 16 million descendants.

It will be interesting to see if the modern development in the direction of human rights for all will grow, shrink, collapse or what; it makes me wish I had a time machine.

It tends to go both ways for example the statistics of domestic violence men themselves suffer abuse by women but the media turns a blind eye completely this was mentioned in another thread though. When it comes to politics and work ethics women tend to get screwed over though.

Yes, let's stop the inequality right now ! !!

I work in a nerdy job and the manager is almost always a woman. (They are nice and don't yell like men managers. They also don't have any technical background.) The new 'agents' are a mix of nerdy guys and women who can barely handle the job but get hired due to the 'equality laws'. The women get to dress pretty much as they please, in slacks or dresses, but us guys have to wear shirt and pants every day. (No kilts.) The women can go to one another and stand there and chat but if two of us blokes try that, the supervisor comes walking over. The women can ask about a system that they have been trained on and should know, but get a free pass to ask as many questions as they want to. If one of us guys asks a question, we get the reply, "you were trained on that, what, are you stupid?"

I'm not posting in any more threads like this. I try to be as intelligent as the rest of you, and I end up in hot water. I'll just look at my face and post about The Kinks from now on.

Here's a particularly disgusting example of sexism: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c ... joboy2.jpg

Huh? Girls in Amish society don't even get to have shoes until they grow up?

I apologize for the little meltdown that I had in this thread. I'm not the most logical person on WP and I ask that you let me make my apology.
