People keep asking me to play RPGs

My roommate often asks me to play roll playing games. I don't really have any interest to. There are very few games (besides video games) that I like to play with a group of people.
He has asked me why I never play. "It's fun! You get to make up any kind of character you want. You can be anyone you want to be."

I'm not exactly sure how to word this, but...... Is it just me, or does that concept seem kind of foreign? I have no idea how to be anyone but me.

Gaming is a pretty big thing with my friends and I'm almost ALWAYS in the other room doing something else. I've been asked many times why I don't like playing games. I don't know how to answer.... I just don't. The only game I do like playing with people is Uno. I don't know why that one game is the exception, but I do enjoy it.

Anyone else not understand the appeal of roll playing games?

I never really got into non video game Based Role Playing Games, when it comes to games like dungeons and dragons, I just don't get into it, I simply cannot immerse myself into a world of someone else's imagination without literally being there through my senses.

I hate RPGs. They are eggstremely boring to me. Creating a character is boring. Playing a character is boring. Playing with other people playing other characters is boring. Making up the boring story is boring. Throughout the eggsperience, my feeling is one of overwhelming boredom.

I like to play Bejeweled Blitz.

I know a lot of people who are in to them and I have no interest in them too. To me, they are just made up, fictional worlds of someone else's imagination and I see no reason to play in their sandbox. Perhaps if I were younger I would get the appeal, but as of now I am too rooted in reality to enjoy them.

I have never liked D&D and the likes... But I did however immerse myself into a game called Second Life or SL for short. It has Role playing in it - but for the most part I made my avi all I wish I COULD be and behaved through written word how it would be if my verbal skills matched my written.

I also met my boyfriend in that game. We started out just a "SL couple" and took it to the real world via Skype and IM's - it has been four great years and I am closer to him than anyone in my "real" world.. so I don't know... SL is considered role play.. but it sure grabbed me in emotionally and it was definitely me in personality.. no pretending there. I loved it while I needed it.

I don't play any games like that anymore. Its all things like Battlefield 3 and Skyrim.

I've never been into those sorts of things. Even when I was a kid I could not get into "fake-play"/role playing. Even now, as much as I enjoy little kids (and find their minds fascinating & amusing), I find it hard to "fake play" with them, such as if a kid family member or a friend's kid asks me to play along as a certain role.

I'm not really into board games either, card games are OK but not really my thing. And when it comes to video games I only played simulations of sorts .

I really want to play these, I've just never had a chance to.

I never liked RPG's just because they're too repetitive. I rather play games with deep storyline and gameplay like "Metal gear solid", now that's definitely not a waste of time.

i have played D&D before, and still do on occasion.
if you find a group with likeminded people, who also enjoy the same kinds of stories, it is actually quite enjoyable...
also, aside from the entertainment value, it has helped me in social situations, since in D&D, the game master usually has the tendancy to introduce new elements that will mess up your carefully made plans. fixing this has taught me to think on my feet without falling out of character; a useful skill in real life.

I play and like but wish I could more. It is wierd I like understanding the world even if it is fictional but I like making characters. I think it is socialization that is actually fun as long as players are good. I actually gm some but usually either for only one other player. One problem with trying to be the game master is to not give away your plans with facial expressions.

I also think that explaining why you like or want something is really hard.

How very odd ... I have the same opinions regarding electronic games as have been expressed here regarding tabletop RPGs.

It's especially ironic to read a statement like, "RPG's are too repetitive ... not at all like Metal Gear Solid".

A lot of people have said they find the idea of playing in someone else's imaginary world uninteresting - I agree, but what about one of your own? I grew up with a best friend relationship in which the two of us created a complex imaginary world filled with characters in which we spent almost all of our time (though we did break off to play a video game now and then). We were considered very antisocial kids - no one else understood the world we spent our time in and therefore we didn't like having other people around since it prevented us being there. Neither of us knew what "role playing" was, this was pre-internet and neither of us had ever heard of that term - we just never stopped the imaginary games we played as kids and the world we created became more sophisticated as we got older with many interconnecting stories. We continued this way until the age of 20 or so, until various demands of adulthood caused us to lose touch.

I wouldn't want to play in anyone else's sandbox either, but playing in our own world was fun! You don't have to follow someone else's rules to roleplay. You can just as easily invent your own.

Anyone ever done the text based role playing games online? Figured I would ask since this seemed to be the perfect topic and it seemed like a good hobby for role players and writers combined.

I don't care about RPGs, both in video games and board games.

Too time consuming and status-based.
