Many historical figures have epithets attached to their name, such as William 'the Conquerer', Alexander 'the Great', Richard 'the Lionheart', Sweyn 'Forkbeard'. It doesn't seem to happen that much anymore. If you could choose an epithet for yourself, what would it be?

Incorrect word usage.

An "epithet" is an insult.

You mean an apellation, or a moniker, or a nickname, or a title.

Not sure of the exact word you're looking for. But not an "epithet"- though those monikers of old were sometimes derogatory (like "Aethelred the Unready").

People didnt have last names in past centuries - so that was one reason they stuck monikers onto names - so you knew which "Alexander" you were talking about ( oh..."the great"- that guy).

What moniker would I want?
Ill have to get back to you about that. Never thought about it.

I'm aware of the insult usage of the word 'epithet'. If I'm not mistaken, it can also be used to refer to the historical moniker. That's the way I meant to use it. Sorry if there was some confusion :)

The online OED defines "epithet" as I'd understood it to mean:
noun
* an adjective or phrase expressing a quality or attribute regarded as characteristic of the person or thing mentioned: old men are often unfairly awarded the epithet ‘dirty’
* an epithet used as a term of abuse: the woman begins to hurl racial epithets at them

dictionary.com goes further:
noun
1. any word or phrase applied to a person or thing to describe an actual or attributed quality: “Richard the Lion-Hearted” is an epithet of Richard I.
2. a characterizing word or phrase firmly associated with a person or thing and often used in place of an actual name, title, or the like, as “man's best friend” for “dog.”
3. a word, phrase, or expression used invectively as a term of abuse or contempt, to express hostility, etc.

Seems it can be both well-intended or an insult.

IRL I'm afraid it was... "Brains". Oh, how we laughed.

The ones I have been given are johnny lightning and johnny the brain. I always hated the second one. I don't know what I pick for my self but johnny the lonely one would be appropriate.
