Why is the eagle in your avatar considerd bald? clearly it has the equivalant of a full head of hair on its head. (feathers)

Their heads are white. The rest of them are dark brown or black. So from a distance they look like their bald. Especially to European explorers who were used to the unifromly colored martial eagle of Eurasia.

But vultures really are "bald" ( have heads bare of feathers-even necks). So it is a bit of misnomer.
