I have come to the conclusion that if World Peace is to happen, than we must start here, at WrongPlanet. We must end all Flame Wars. We must act civil towards one another. We must accept each other, as we each happen to be. We must see each other as equals. We must be gentle with everybody. We, at WrongPlanet must set an example for the world to follow! We must raise the bar, for the rest of the world. We must show the Planet Earth, our illuminated light of peace and hope. Only than, will we have World Peace.

The concept of "world peace" is at conflict with evolution. Conflict is unavoidable.
Its a natural process and when we have "world peace" evolution dies and all progess
will come to a halt.

Outer peace begins with inner peace.

To declare simply that world peace must happen is a grand positive intention and I applaud those who for a optimistic future however it is also naive when one takes into considerations the complexities of the world. Forums are a good example of attempting to get people to discuss in a open, yet friendly manner. But what you find is that angry confrontation over various issues erupt between members. Attempts at civility rarely get anywhere. Usually the only way to ensure a sense of unity within a forum is to simply ban those who stray from agreement with an orthodoxy, however this merely makes forums bland, dull, or extremist in nature.

On the world stage talk of cooperation, and "end of all wars" was most high after the First World War which brought unspeakable destruction. Countries readily signed treaties which "outlawed wars" and those who said such documents useless were demonized. However, we saw with the breaking out of the Second World War in Europe and Asia that war was not something that could just be "ended."

Today, the question is not how to achieve world peace. We will not achieve it on this board. This board is only numbering near 8,000 people in a world of 6 billion. We will not achieve it in our own western legislatures. World peace literally cannot be achieved today at all anyway because most of the world really isn't ruled by the people at all but by people ruling in their name (1/6 of the world is China and is ruled by the Chinese Politburo). Democracies virtually never make war on one another. But we can't hold rallies asking the Chinese people not to occupy Tibet or attack Taiwan because it's meaningless. Their voice doesn't matter. When they use violence it does however as shown by massive 100,000 rallies opposing various city governments that have forced those local governments to stand down.

We must be realistic.

Compared to other forums which i have been involved with, this is by far the friendliest.

As for hippies, i hope you have overcome your 'fear' of them ?

I think we got off track. CockneyRebel said that if there will be world peace, it has to start here. True. And then others said that's not been the case with evolution, or with history. Also true.

But one is dealing with future in micro terms, and the other is the past in macro terms.

Also, it's not either/or. One less war would be way cool.

So I think we should be even more micro. Can we get along with our neighbours? our siblings? our parents? *That's* where we're going to learn how to be a peacemaker, individually, and then collectively.

Also I hereby abolish group hugs.

CockneyRebel is a good person and doesn't like people fighting (I don't either). That is why she started this topic I think. Then I got obsessed with how it worked out in the grand schemes of thing and posted on that. And then I felt kinda bad for writing such a serious critique both because have I have little self confidence and CockneyRebel is such a nice person so I wrote that I am such a pessimist (which I am).

I believe in constructive discord, but I will join the peace movement anyway!
