Depends on what kind of friendship you're talking about? If you just chat and such then it is probably safe. I'd say don't share things like your address but these days like everyone is one Facebook so things like that would be easy to figure out. Just don't go meeting people you've met online without knowing for sure that they are who they say they are, and even then, be cautious.
I guess the limits are what you don't feel comfortable with, but keep in mind that what's sent over the Internet, stays on the Internet and can come back to haunt you. Don't let anyone talk you into things you'd rather not do, if they keep pushing then they're no friends.
Tell tale signs of someone being fake is if you catch them in lies if you talk to them over longer periods of time. Or if they keep finding excuses not to go on webcam or send a picture when you've already done so. Or if a picture they sent you yields odd results when doing a reverse image search on Google.
Is there any particular reason that you're asking this question or are you just curious?

It they contact you first with some comment about liking your profile and wanting you to talk to them by email, be very wary. Have you read the PM Spams and Scams thread? Some people just want your money.
