To all those whose native language is English: I need to ask for your help on the following matter.
I feel a little awkward about this request. I’d like to hear what you think about my English. I’m German but never had any problems in English class in school from then on. (Quite the contrary, my last teacher wanted to send me off to Britain for some kind of scholarship.)

Now I have a new teacher that told me first results of my English class test I had written in December. According to him, my language is… actually, he didn’t say that much, just showed me a paper with numbers on it I didn’t quite get and told me about my test that the content was good, but the language was… he trailed off and screwed up his face. I’m one of those worst case scenarios I think, because on that paper my results were marked red, so he certainly wasn’t about to express something good with that face. Ouch.
Since he didn’t give back the test itself yet, I don’t know what exactly he meant when he said “expression” and “grammar”.

I decided finding someone who’s a native speaker that I could ask was the best of ideas and this made me think of WP. I don't know any other place.
This is a really important matter to me because my German is screwed up every since I taught myself English as a child. I think in English rather than in German when I use language and mix up both at sometimes even today, so this is just really important.

Well, what do you think? No need to hold back, the truth only please.

Not bad, infact better than some stuff I've seen written by native english speakers. you're missing out on some punctuation but your grammar and usage seem fine to me. I'd like to see a larger sample of your writing though.

This is joke, right?? Someone putting us on?? A comedian, eh? Some youngster pretending to be German, and writing perfect (OK, near-perfect) English to see if we'll fall for correcting it?

I'm confused. I didn't intend to fool anybody, I'm serious about this. Or was it irony, Prof_Pretorius?

your expression seems to be very good. I don't know why your teacher didn't like it, but of course, there are native english speakers who are a lot worse. Perhaps you teacher just has a certain style of expression he doesnt like and your is it.

Semi-ironical, as usual.

Seriously, I don't detect any of the usual 'tell-tales' of a foreign speaker in your english. Your grammar is better than most of those who post on this website. Your spelling is perfect. Even your phraseology is good. Too good. Too perfect.

HA ! I've re-convinced myself ! !

I see nothing too out of the ordinary. There was an improper word usage here and there, but it is (by far) better than many native English-speaking people I have seen. An example of the word usage would be you using "sometimes" toward the end of the post; this may have been a simple misprint, as opposed to an error in your usage, but I decided it deserved mention either way.

Your English is good, quite good in fact, especially considering your native tongue is (technically) German. There are a decent number of German words that can be recognized in the English language, but there are many more which derive from Latin routes. Teaching yourself English at an early age was a smart move on your part, because it is obvious that you have a firm grasp of the language. I don't know what your teacher is smoking, but if it's that good, maybe I should ask him for some...

I am just wondering, is there an intense pressure to be able to learn English in non-native countries? Would people who don't speak it well in school get ridiculed by their classmates, or their teachers? I have heard a lot if nonnative speakers apologize on the internet when I don't think anyone in my country cares that much about grammar.
