Interesting anecdote: the last British Governor of Hong Kong, Chris Patten, visited my dad's place of work not long after the Handover. (Chris Patten was born in Cleveleys, not that far from here and a nice seaside town to boot.)

My nephew lived there for 3 years (a banking-related job) and enjoyed it, but was glad to escape.
He's away at the moment but I could pass on any specific questions if it would help any.

My first posting in the foreign service was Hongkong. I lived there for four years, from 1992 to 1996, during Patten's administration.

I'm afraid the HK idea has been scrapped as it's just unaffordable for us.

Quote:
Hong Kong - anyone been?

i was dragged through south east asia and i did not like it at all. i was 11 when i was last in "hong kong".
i felt amused by the sound of the words "hong kong", but i was not able to connect very well with the culture.
asian culture is impossible for me to understand even now, let alone then.
their music seemed nonsensical to me, and the place stank of "noodles" and so i was happy when we departed hong kong when we did.

To me it means Bruce Lee first and foremost......the least the city could do is turn his house into a museum instead of tearing it down (so what if he had a mistress)

About the music.......they prolly think "our" music is weird and Rush Hour films is Western humor.

Personally I found it bit too crowded , it didnt feel that way walking in NY streets , lots more space there........

My parents went there on a church related trip a couple years ago. It is a pretty city but the weather is horrible. Intolerably hot and humid, in October at least. Walking the urban canyons and alleyways there is no breeze and it stinks like seafood that is everywhere. The fact that the whole city is on a steep hillside and you have to constantly walk up hill makes you sweat even more.

I plan on visiting Hong Kong this summer, on a trip to East Asia. I must see it. It is a city that belongs to the whole world, a global command center and cosmopolis on par with Dubai and London.
