And should I worry that they bought the liquor store?
I didn't know they were really from somewhere else for a while when my 17 yo son (at the time) started working there. Then he got in a fight with one of them over some stupid sh*t. And so I went in there tonight to get cigarettes cause they were the only place open. First off, dude was rude and there was horrible not music playing and he wore this weird thing and said WHAT YOU WANT and I told him I was so and so's mother then he got real nice and all and I fist bumped him for slapping around the crackhead that was trying to steal the CD's but I don't know if I trust him. He was all one way before then all nice. That's like a Yellow Dog Democrat there!
I said Where are you from anyway? He said Yemen. Now he may have just been saying someplace he knew I wouldn't know. I don't know.
It's not that he's middle eastern. I love learning about cultures and stuff. Its why the hell would he move TO THIS TOWN from anywhere? That's what I don't trust. Nobody moves here by choice!
Yemen is directly south of Saudi Arabia, and is right next to Oman, although Oman is to the east, and slightly more north of Yemen. Yemen is an Arab country, is one of the poorest Arab states with the official statistic is that 35% are employed and the country has quite low standards of living (therefore probably his reason for moving), and in is primarily Muslim.
Many Yemeni's move to Saudi Arabia or the United Arab Emirates, which is also not far away, or to other places to find work, as the national economy of both Yemen and Oman is usually overshadowed by Saudi Arabia.
I have met a few Yemeni's and quite a few Omani's before. Most of the Omani's I have met are absolutely lovely people - and the majority of Yemeni's too. I suspect I have merely had very, very good luck in this regard thus far though. Some of the cultural differences can seem quite abrupt to westerners, but most of the younger generation who come here to work or study seem to integrate very well.
