Okay... I don't know if this is the right forum for this topic, maybe it should be in the Women's Discussion, but this is something I think I need to tell everyone about. but I read the other day that some "wonderful" people had put pages containing some really horrible, woman-hating "humor" about rape and killing and abuse towards women and even showing equally hateful pictures on FB. And people reported it and yet Facebook did nothing, and now several companies have even pulled their ads (temporarily most likely) of FB. (I guess there is a silver lining in this cloud). The other day I was saying online about North American society overreacting to everything, but the other day I was in a very foul mood (it was my time of month, but that's no excuse) and I started ranting on FB, calling it FAILbook and how just when I start to feel bad for guys or think they're okay, they do something like this! I think most censorship is stupid, but if not wanting to see anything online that is abusive, bullying, hateful towards people because of their race, gender, age or sexual orientation is censorship is that "wrong" too? It seems to me that people only go on about the right to free speech after they have totally abused that right. I know most people are using their computer as a shield to say horrible things they wouldn't have the guts to someone's face, but I also know people will hate no matter what we do. So apparently anything and everything I find offensive is wrong (like swearing and graphic violence) and things I don't find offensive (like seeing a horse's penis but they blurr it out on TV, which is so like... OMG do we need to "Lorena Bobbit" male horses in real life so people won't be offended?!?) is wrong, too? Nothing makes sense any more... :?

I think most of it is. If everything was censored, we wouldn't have the Internet.

I believe censorship has its time and place. I do not enjoy curse words or gore unless it is something I choose to see or hear, and that it shouldn't be in my face for another person's sake (such as people with bass systems playing offensive music and rattling my home's windows). Facebook itself is in international waters as it were and not a part of the US, the internet is a place where freedom of speech does not really apply nor can always be denied.

I don't think rude people hide behind their computers. I encounter rude people on a daily basis in real life. Our culture seems to encourage this type of behavior. I don't believe in censorship, it is a very slippery slope. Free speech merely allows people to prove how stupid they are.

I think everything has a certain amount of censorship that's appropriate. For example, I'm glad nudity is banned from Facebook because that isn't what I go on there for; I'm glad hate speech is banned as well because as a Gayboy Bunny it would be and has been extremely upsetting to see speech threatening me or my friends. It isn't always a case of vulgarity or offensiveness though - I'm sure porn sites wouldn't allow photos of maimed car crash victims and vice versa. It isn't what you're visiting the site for.

I don't know how I feel about censorship because it doesn't make sense to me. I don't understand why something's allowed but in a very similar situation & place it's not. I don't know where the line is drawn/ it's too ambiguous & seems completely arbitrary. Also censorship & free speech get abused by hypocrites in power. They claim or believe that free speech gives them to rite to spew hatred but then when another group says something agins them the don't like they try to censor them

All censorship is always wrong.

I think most forms of censorship are wrong... however, there are some circumstances when it is right. Example: Keeping graphic violence, hate speech and porn from children... which SHOULD be parents' responsibility, but unfortunately these days some parents don't supervise their children very much. When it comes to adults, that's where I stand against censorship. Once a person is an adult, I feel that person should have the right to see / hear whatever they want without censorship. Just my 2 cents worth.
