It took 75 years for someone at DC Comics to ask the same question and finally update Superman's costume to get rid of those ridiculous red man-panties.

Maybe it's cause their skintight super-suits show off the fact that they're very muscular, so the underwear is supposed to look similar to competitive bodybuilder-shorts or the same idea at least.
