Ok, so i'll be honest.. I get very easily frightened, which is kind of weird considering the fact that when i was a kid barely found anything scary.
Still, there were 4 specific things that somehow even back then, managed to give me chills far down my spine, even until this day .. For some strange reason i find it really really hard to be in the same room with these objects, here it goes:

Image

I don't really know why these things freak me out so much, but i'll try to imagine a reason:

+ "Faceless paintings" (for the most part old paintings where you can't see the faces of the people in it) -----> I think this might come off as creepy because you can't tell "who the person is". It's in our nature as humans, to wish to see the faces of the people we're dealing with

+ Clowns -----> Clowns are creepy in general, the way they look, the way they act, the way they talk - everything about them.. But i also think they come off as scary because all the face paint plus the costume covers up the true identity of the person underneath it - Making them anonymous - they can see who we are, but we can't see who they really are.

+ Ventriloquist dummies -----> Come on! Just look at them, they freakin scream "There's a reason why i can move my mouth, but sadly you won't find out before it's to late.." These dolls with gigantic holes at their rare end made for human hands only are ghastly - period!

+ Dolls (Especially old ones and those of porcelain) -----> First of all i find them scary because they have a child like appearance, and many of them actually look very life like. There's something very unsettling with objects that resemble humans, because it sort of makes you get the feeling like their about to move or talk, like real living human beings do. Oh, and the eyes at those doll - oh dear.. those piercing pitch black eyes gazing right into your soul (that's what it feels like). Bleh! I just dislike them dolls

*Blush* makes me a little embarrassed now that i think of it - that i find those rather harmless object/things scary :P

Hi ChromaticRaven,

I am with you on this, although I don't have an issue with the 'faceless' paintings. I fact, I think those are better than some with faces that seem to stare at you in a creepy manner. Although after looking at the example you posted for a little while, now I am imagining it turning round and having some kind of horror face.

Dolls are spooky, I didn't even like them as a child I much preferred teddy bears. I think anything that is close to resembling humans but not quite is spooky, I can't look at chimpanzees for the same reason.

Ventriloquist dummies are like dolls, but even worse because of the unnatural way their jaws drop when they are 'talking'.

I have saved clowns for last because they are the worst. I know a few people who have problems with them. I found out years later that my brother watched a horror film with a clown in it (the movie It?) with me in the room when I was really little and he was supposed to be babysitting. So that probably didn't help me!

So you are not alone in finding these things scary. 8)

Those dolls and clowns.. Must be popular choices in these kinda threads :P

3) Also don't like horizons/hugs (almost) empty spaces which I can't focus on anything. It just fears be somehow.
4) Moments like in horror movies when you something will happen, I dislike those things as well. Kinda weird because when I don't expect it and it just happens I can't be to much bothered about it. I don't like horror movies in general hehe.

Thanks for managing to put in words what i didn't manage to myself - exactly - those painting give off that sort of vibe were you get a paranoid feeling that they might end up turning towards you only to reveal a horrifying face..

Golly.. Guess who probably won't be able to sleep tonight -.-

Hi ChromaticRaven.

I totally agree with you on ventriliquist dolls they give me the creeps too, once there was a show called collecters and someone had a whole room full of them yuck.

spiders are creepy too I had a big huntsman spider on me one day you should have heard me scream.

I find those statues in parks creepy as well probably because they don't seem to have any eyes.

I agree about clowns being creepy.

I'm curious, ChromaticRaven, do any of these things creep you out?

Image
Life-like robots

Image
Face masks

...because your examples all seem to be related somewhat to the Uncanny Valley effect, or to the lack of a "normal" human face.

I think many of those things are scary because they have a human form but are somehow different. If you think about many monsters and ghosts, they often have human-like shapes, too. So I think anything that looks like a modified version of human being is rather scary.

I agree that the things that are mentioned in the OP are creepy. But the pics in yellowtamarin's post are both rather nice and neat.

For me, anything that is (seemingly) unhygienic, seeming to be somehow related to injury/disease/death is rather creepy. For example, many neatly aligned eggs laid by a moth on a leaf or something is very uncomfortable to look at. Also hundreds/thousands of springtails/aphids together freak me out. Cockroaches and mold on food, too.

Lots of the pictured things were evil characters in movies. It by Stephen King had an evil clown. Dead Silence had killer ventriloquist dummies, and Chucky was of course a doll.
