I just drank a cup of coffee to stay awake at work today and I was wondering: Are stimulants of any kind, whether it be coffee or sugar, categorically drugs in the same way as cocaine, heroin and Marijuana? My reasoning is all of these things are stimulants and mood enhancers as well.

Yes

They're on a spectrum of potency

Coffee to speed (methamphetamines), for example of your uppers
Booze to barbiturates/benzodiazepines, for your downers

There's similar for pain killers, like codeine to heroin/morphine

Major tranquilizers don't really have a mild form of, though.

I don't think sugar is a stimulant, let alone a drug. it's food. No, really. And I don't think it's as "evil" as a the Health Nazis claim. That whole "sugar makes your kids hyper" thing is a myth. Kids may act hyper after they eat candy and sweets, but that's usually during holidays or at a party where they're already excited and worked up enough to be bouncing off the walls. :)

Caffeine is a much weaker stimulant than cocaine, but it's no less of a drug than alcohol. Too much of it or combining it with another stimulant can make your heart go spastic. It's got to be in moderation, like everything else.

My fourth cup of coffee this morning disagrees. It says I should have four more cups when it's gone.

Yes caffeine is a drug one that plenty of people are dependent on and don't even really realize it. As for sugar its weird...I mean pretty sure it is more classed as a food source than a drug, but it can cause some amount of stimulation as well.

Well with coffee especially if you've been drinking it regularly a long time....I don't think 8 cups will harm you that much. Now if it was your fourth energy drink and you were going to have 4 more then there would be cause for concern.

There's some obese kid playing Call of Duty on his fourth energy drink right now that disagrees with you-- he needs the energy for his workout.

Caffeine withdrawal headaches can be pretty bad I've found (similar to migraines in severity). Plus, you can get agitated.

It's more potent than ethanol for me in regards to effects and symptoms I experience when I stop (I don't get any with ethanol when I stop drinking when I run out).

Well I believe, sugar is also a stimulant. I watched a NBC report about a family that started a strict non sugar diet. They made video journals and they mentioned feeling tired, moody etc, as if their body had a specific dependency. Im not a health Nazi but all those symptoms sound like withdraw to me. Let's face it, sugar enhances mood like an upper. America has always been a country full of drug users, whether it be alcohol, cocaine or sugar.

PS, the i only had one cup to get through the morning. Drinking the cup just go me thinking about drugs in general, hmm... Coincidence?

Or it could be that you need some form of sugar, even fruits have sugar in them....not a lot and not like table sugar, but a 100% sugar free diet could make most people feel like crap. The trick is avoiding excessive sugar especially artificial sugar like high fructose corn syrup or so I thought. To entirely cut sugar out would mean no fruit and without fruit and veggies people get sick because meat, bread and dairy alone won't do the trick...but wait I thought bread also contained certain sugars could be wrong about that though.

Coffee is relatively mild but can give you a good boost. Ritalin is similar to cocaine but weaker in effect, and possibly a similar molecular structure but I can't remember; amphetamines feel FUREAKIN GREAT but can also be dangerous, yes, stimulants are drugs and wonderful drugs if used correctly. I personally believe they could further mankind and we shouldn't restrict ourselves from using them, however, regardless of legality, abuse will happen. People like to get messed up, it's just one of the inescapable facts of life.
