How to cat-proof a home

Johnny has a problem on his hands. I have a young kitten named Soul (after Soul from Soul Eater, an anime) who just chewed one of my ethernet cables! This had me infuriated and irritated.

What am I supposed to do, to keep the cat from chewing on the damn thing? One solution would be to keep the doors closed when the cat is nearby.

You can go to the pet store and buy a bottle of bitter apple and spray it on there and he wont like the taste. Or you can make a paste of black pepper and vinegar and rub it on. You need to put something on there he wont like the taste of. Also, get an empty spray bottle and fill it with water. Spray him with it and say NO! whenever he does something he shouldn't, then move him somewhere else.

Another piece of related advice: Replace the toilet/bog paper rolls so that it unrolls down the back. That way, when the cat tries to sharpen its claws on the roll (and you know that it eventually will), you won't end up with a pile of paper on the floor.

Another trick that works well is double-sided tape (or a loop of tape sticky side out), placed on anything you want kitty to stay off / away from. Cats HATE anything sticky on their paws.

One of our cats was (and still on random occasions, is) a cable chewer. We tried many things, but the ones that worked best were-

Bitter apple spray- was the only one that worked. Tabasco had limited success, as it wore off quickly.
Wrapping cables that are bundled in tin foil
Giving the little furry felon drinking straws to play with/chew. Diverted him.

Time will tell though- he utterly destroyed the christmas tree lights last year, so will be buying cheap again and treating them with bitter apple.

My new kitten recently started chewing wires. For now I'm keeping him in my room a lot (no wires in there) and carefully supervising him any time he is out.

For my other cat I blocked off as many wires as I could and it worked for him but there are some that I can't block off.

I'm hoping that he is just teething now and will outgrow it.

I don't have much money so I haven't been able to get any kind of wire covers or stuff to put on the wires.

They chew the wires because they find the electrical zapping stimulating on their tongue for some reason, it must be the same with dogs AND cats. My dog (or my mum's dog now) chewed through the phone cable we had running under the house. We had to get a Telstra tech to fix it lol.
