On stupid-expensive hockey tickets to Thursday night's game.

He has 4 seasons tickets to the Vancouver Canucks but sold his weeks ago as they've had a terrible season and he didn't care to see whoever the other team is. But everything has changed since then.

They announced that they're adding ~$400K to the 50/50 draw of unclaimed prizes from the whole season. Then my brother decided to go to the game and take my dad and one of my dad's friends. The family friend's brother is a ticket scalper and said demand was low for the last home game of their shittiest season in many years so he'd be able to sell them a few tickets no problem just hit him up a couple hours before game time. So my brother stopped looking for tickets for sale.. and then this morning the Sedin twins, Daniel & Henrik, announced their retirement after 18 years on the team so Thursday night's game will be their last NHL game ever. Tickets that were $99 yesterday have an asking price of $1000 today.

I messaged and said I hope he already bought tickets because no one's getting in the door for less than $250.. I know what his budget is and he said it is what it is there'll be other important games and the night where they retire the twins' jerseys and all that whatever the f**k sports stuff people spend their time and money on lol and while he's right, and for one of the first time in recent memory he's being financially responsible about this, I told him our father's doesn't get excited for much and he's excited to go to This game and it will literally be good for his health and recovery while he's going through this round of chemo, so, spend the money. Buy 3 balcony tickets and go. I'll pay for whatever it costs over and above his budget, because my dad's worth it.

Then there's the fact that my brother has been very generous with me over the years (paid for a vacation to vegas, several concert tickets etc) and he's obviously a big fan. Plus I opted not to go to Las Vegas with all of them to watch the Canucks play the Knights there because I don't care about hockey and I see my dad every day lol so the money I didn't spend on that game I'll spend on this one in some sort of karmic balance.. well, that is so long as he's able to get tickets. I mean, I know he can, it's just a matter of how much money it costs, really. I hope he spends my money (which he initially declined until I insisted because dad rarely gets excited for anything And it'l be good for his health) but not toooooo much of it. :P

I'll probably spend the next couple of days, and likely game time, with my mom visiting grandma in the home she lives in. She's 96 & her health is declining rapidly and this time she may not pull through. She didn't have the energy to speak today. I accept that she may day any moment. I've seen her twice last week. I'll go tomorrow. I just got the update about losing the ability to even talk anymore and get any words out just now while writing this post. It'd be an interesting coincidence if she were to pass away the same evening I've sent my father off to have fun & heal. One up, one down, all evening out in the constant flux of things. But she's also stubbornly continued to live after we thought she might die a few years ago, too. But this time feels much more real, more likely.

But I hope she keeps on living. And I hope my brother spends my money and they go this game. And even better I hope they win the 50/50 draw which is going to be at least a quarter Million dollars. 8)

No one cares but me  but he's monitoring prices every hour or so. They've dropped from $289 to $220. He's hoping to pay more like $150 a piece, but I told him to just pay $180 or w/e if he has to, especially to get 3 in a row. He's going to head over to the Arena after work this eve and talked to the friend of our friend if he's there selling tickets and see if he's got three in a row. Maybe he's right and they still can get 3 in a row just before game time at a lower price point, buuuut I'd rather pay an extra hundred bucks than them risk not getting 3 in a row. Hmmm

If I gave my sister money for a present, I'd want her to spend it.

He phoned the arena and waited on hold before they opened and bought the ONLY pair of tickets they released this morning. Then he phoned again on his lunch break and bought the ONLY pair of tickets they released this afternoon. So, he managed to get 2 pairs of tickets for a grand total of $266 - which is under his budget for 3 tickets in the first place, and someone else is paying for the 4th one.

Oh, and grandma's still alive. Apparently she's back to being able to talk today, but is in agonizing pain now. That's no good. At least they have drugs for her. I'm off to do a little work, maybe I'll go see her again tomorrow.

I'm glad he was able to get tickets.
I'm sorry about your grandma & hope the meds keep her from being in too much pain.

He traded the two pairs of tickets for his original 4 in a row that he sold to a friend so now he has his tickets back for tonight's game.

Thx, nick. Grandma's 96, she's lived a long life. If it's her time, it's her time. And yes, pain meds are a blessing for her right now.

Maybe! One or two of her siblings/inlaws made it to 100/101. A couple of her brothers are somewhere around their early 90’s. Never know, I might get their long lifespan genes, too.

Yesterday she said that a couple days ago she thought she was going to die, and then the next day she felt like she was getting better (got her voice back) and then yesterday she was in pain and felt like she was slipping again. That’s life when you’re 96 and get a cold with a possible touch of pneumonia. This is likely thanks to some clueless woman who kept coming to visit her mother even though she had a cold. 3 of the seniors caught it. A staff member at the home spoke with the woman and she seemed totally clueless to the fact that she shouldn’t come visit when she has a cold and said her mother wasn’t getting sick so it must be ok. Idiot. Very old people are pretty much immunocompromised. So stupid of her to risk others’ health (and lives) and think nothing of it.

Now the biggest decision of our day is how much money to pool together to buy 50/50 tickets for what may be the biggest cash prize ever at a Canucks game. It’ll be at least a quarter Million dollar prize to the winner & the odds of winning are FAR better than playing the lottery (which is around 16 Billion to 1) since there are only ~16-18k ppl there buying tix.

Prices are:

3 for $5
7 for $10
18 for $20
50 for $50

I guess it depends how much money others throw down. I figure we may as well buy our pooled tickets in multiples of $50. We were each going to throw down $20, but I might thrown in $50 oooorrr whatever amount rounds it up to the next $50. Hmmmm, we’ll figure it out. :)

Normally I never buy lottery tickets or gamble, but when it’s a huge prize with relatively decent odds, or a record breaking lottery jackpot once every year or two, then I will. Plus the other half of the 50/50 money goes to the Canucks for Kids fund to support health and wellness, kids hockey programs, as well as Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, BC Children’s Hospital Foundation, annnnnd the Canucks Autism Network.

My dad's on the way to the game with friends and family.

And grandma passed away at 4:30pm. I had a feeling about this day. She lived a long, good, life, and there are a lot of us here because of her - flaws and mistakes and all. She needed to hear things like that often and I'm glad I was able to tell her those things.

It was probably very peaceful.. everyone was between visits/en route and while they feel bad they didn’t make it up in time to be with her when she passed, I’m sure she went in peace considering she didn’t have to listen to any of her kids arguing.

Edit: I’m 35yo and this is the first time I’ve ever seen a dead body. (I’m still there now, sitting across from her.) She looks incredibly peaceful.. like she’s in a deep sleep, only perfectly still. She was a very religious Catholic woman and I’m sure she took a nice DMT trip to meet her maker. 8)

Canucks won their game and the retiring identical twins scored & assisted the winning goal. (as well as another)

Not sure what the final 50/50 jackpot was but I don't think we won it as I haven't heard anything. Ah well. Someone just got pretty rich tonight, though!

I'm at peace about grandma. We stayed until someone from the funeral home was able to come get her (about 5 hours) I stayed in the room as he transferred her from her bed to his wheeled cart. My mom & her sister will grieve and carry on. It's my two uncles, especially the older one, who aren't going to deal with this well. Just imagine all of them from grandma on down all having different ASD traits, IQ's, and functioning levels. My older uncle has been so dependant on my grandmother for most of his life he's going to have a difficult time with all the changes. At least she's been in a care home for the last 2 years or so so he's gotten used to her not being at the house. It's still going to be difficult for him and none of his siblings get along with him well (for many good reasons) so I have a feeling I'll be over to that house helping keep the peace while things are packed up and sold/donated and the property sold etc. If that's a thing I've gotta do, then I guess it's a thing I've gotta do. I think a part of why it's easier for me to be in that position is that I've learned so much about AS that I can much more easily tolerate his behaviour because I understand it so well.

8O

50/50 draw at a hockey game:

50-50 Jackpot: $1,014,556
$507,278 to the winning ticket #BS 108 8629

We don't know for sure, but I asked my brother and he's pretty sure it's both a team and likely NHL league record. Wouldn't be surprised.. it was seeded with $400K, but they still sold over $600K worth of 50/50 tickets tonight. That's rather impressive! A nice sendoff for the Sedin's legacy in this city, too. They've been active with the various Canucks for Kids charities over the years.

8O Apparently this 50/50 draw was more than just a Canucks team & NHL league record:

Wow!

The more I am interacting with other people on the spectrum, and learning about ASD the more understanding I feel it is making me of other people in general.

Sorry about your Grandma, it sounds like she had a worthy innings before she went. :flower:
