Don't forget retardant. Some man was fired for using that word and people thought it was ret*d or was it retardent he used? Someone once posted an article about it here how using words lot of people don't know can get you in trouble.

Fire retardant.

Things can ret*d growth. Yep. Such a use of the word is found frequently in books.

"A retired worker from a factory that made chemical flame retardant was injured today in what seems to have started as a case of road rage. The retired retardant manufacturer witnessed another driver screaming the insult 'ret*d!' at another driver and pursued him. He was injured when his retread tire blew out." That could be one confusing news story. I'm trying to think of other words that sound or look the same now.

ETA; "The blow out could have been caused by the fact that the road was being re-tarred."

So? The English language is filled with homonyms and words with similar spellings. In some contexts they can be offensive, and in some they aren't.

How exactly was I aiming to be condescending? I was merely trying to express that I don't understand the purpose behind this thread.

It sounded like you were putting down the thread because obviously some words sound similar, sometimes they are offensive and sometimes they aren't, and even though we know it, you still told us, sort of like you were "getting on to us" like we were silly kids. That's how it came across to me. I have no idea what the point of the thread was either, but it's in Random, so I'm assuming it can simply be someone pointing out something that really doesn't matter all that much. Kind of a fluff post was how I took it and I joked around about it. That's how his post came across to me. It sounded like you are trying to tell us to stop being silly and be serious, and there was a tone of condescension in there when you explained my own joke to me. That comes across bad.

Not all posts in Random are fluff, but this is the place to put one if you ever want to make one.

Oh, okay. Well in that case I apologize for coming across as offensive. It wasn't in my intentions to belittle the OP, the thread or any of the content in it. I was just trying to say that I didn't understand the basis behind it.

And I apologize for my sarcastic response to you. I really thought you were trying to be mean.

Fire retardant.
This reminds me of a quote from The Simpsons ep where Firemen were visiting at school teaching the kids about stuff.

Bart~ "What's that stuff?"
Principal Skinner~ "Why, this is retardant!"
Bart~ (laughs) "Sure is! Hey, what's that?"
Principal Skinner~ "That's called a hose lengthener."
Bart~ (laughs) "You need one!"
Principal Skinner~ "G'oh!"
Bart~ "What's this?"
Principal Skinner~ "Just read the label. It's a king-sized flamer!"
(Bart explodes with laughter)

There are also words like immoral and immortal - not having anything to do with each other.
