My friend and I have contemplated them as portals. We have also wondered about time and if you look into a mirror it's actually you like, seconds in the future. I have nothing to support this theory, just ponderings. I think mirrors also offer a feeling of always being watched because it seems to me that most people can't help but look at themselves when they are near a mirror.
Have you ever read a fantasy novel called "Mirror of Her Dreams"? It's got a fun premise about mirrors as portals. It's by Stephen R. Donaldson.
I thought I saw someone vanish when I was clothes-shopping with my mom as a little kid. Turned out I was seeing a reflection as she was walking by a mirror. She was on the other side of the store and when she passed the mirror, she walked out of the reflection .
