I'm wondering if somebody can help me with this - I'm trying to describe 2 patterns

One is like this

(it would continue like that with random spaces between symbols)

I'm trying to say something like covering the whole thing and spaces between, but I'm pretty sure there are precise ways to say it. Does anybody know the two words? Thanks!

I think I got it - tight and loose. I can't believe I couldn't remember those words!
