Add Ham Radio to the list. Some of the radio transmitters are over $15,000 when kitted out with all the accessories, then there's the tower with the big beam antenna on top.

Number 19, Collecting Cars.

This could run from the cheap to insanely expensive. You would have to be very rich indeed to co;;act vintage Ferraris, which can cost over $3 million each.

Any radio controlled hobby is likely going to be expensive.

I've been involved in classic car loving and restoring. That can easily suck up every dime you earn.

I know people who are yachties. Any craft that floats on salt water can be crazy expensive.

Motor racing is fun as hell, it's hard to resist spending more money :)

But I don't agree with their inclusion of Model Railroading. A single train worth $300 is woopdy-do compared to working your 455 cu engine again.

you must be quite wealthy - for some people $300 is way out of reach - that is 3 months grocery budget to me

Horology. Some of the equipment made by companies like Boley and Lorch run about €16.000. That is over 22.000 US dollars for a device used in watch and clock making. Small components like cross slides run about €400. Same for model engineering.

Locomotive. A single locomotive can be worth 300 bucks. That's not counting cars or controllers.

I disagree with your disagreement. At home I'm modelling an 8' by 4', single track, DC-powered HO layout and so far I've sunk at least $1000 into it (trains and layout together), and I'm gonna need about $125-150 more before its done. I also work at a transportation museum and compared to some of my fellow club members I'm only just scratching the surface when it comes to investment (most of them have several thousand bucks worth of stuff in trains alone). Granted, it's not nearly as expensive as working with cars or boats, but it's still pretty damn costly considering all you're essentially doing is playing with toys.

Their example is not very good. If a hobbyist gets involved with large scale live steam train layouts that take up their entire backyard (like Walt Disney) it can be very expensive.

As for people with yachts, I used to work for a bloke with a large (not huge) sailboat that he used to sail to other countries. That is a very expensive hobby. I saw the bills he paid for hull cleaning, and it was an expensive proposition.

they left out digital audio restoration, I've spent a small fortune over the last 2+ decades on equipment and software.

ZOMG, $550 for scuba diving equipment and $400 for certification. Who could ever afford that? Like maybe only anybody with a job.

Almost everything on the list could be done without spending a lot of money. Even the ones that are expensive, you could probably turn into a job and actually make money from it. Example if you bought a $45,000 hot air balloon, you could probably make money giving people rides in it.

So I don't buy it, that any of these hobbies are prohibitively expensive.
