I live in the UK and if I order something from the US that costs $55.46 which translated to UK currency would be £32.99, it is the £32.99 that would come out of my bank account right?

i believe so. however, you will probably have to pay outrageous importing fees.

i ordered some $25 kirby figures from japan. shipping cost was around $40

No. Banks typically use a slightly worse (for you) exchange rate than the official/middle rate.

If it was through Ebay or Amazon you can expect that number to be right, though I would read carefully to ensure that shipping won't cost more than the value of the item. Living in the US for me means only being able to buy items from China that allow the unit cost after shipping to be advantageous over waiting for someone to import it and buying locally.

Another thing about international shipping; someone sent me a CD from AUS and it cost AU$ 6, for me to send the same thing would cost nearly US$ 40, I've a mind to just drive to LAX and hit up someone boarding a Qantas and have them drop it in the post once they arrive
