I am a believer and respects the clergy, priests and nuns.

In Poland, some people do not respect religious and call them, penguins, due to the appearance of a religious habit. I wonder if in the English language nuns are also associated with the penguins?

We call them penguins in the UK, as well. They also call them penguins in the film, Blues Brothers. They do look a bit like penguins. I don't think the nuns I know care about that name, they have much more important things to think about but I agree that it does seem a bit disrespectful. This is especially true when you can't call Muslim women in veils ninjas whilst in polite company, despite the fact that they do look a bit like ninjas. It's the same thing, almost.

Yes, I've heard it being said in England. I'm surprised that the term has currency in Poland; I thought it they respected Catholic institutions and the clergy, on the whole. I'm often told, by "traditionalist" Catholics, though perhaps they're biased, that the Church in Poland is one of the few remaining bastions of the faith.

I remember the term being used in Problem Child, when Junior wanted "to see if penguins could fly".

I had not thought, Muslim women in burqas actually look like ninjas :-) It's really funny, but it's better not to joke about it with members of al Qaeda, because you can lose your head :D

Yes we Poles are quite religious, but not all, when I was young, I was at a summer camp, there were kids from different social groups, both rich and poor kids from the orphanage. It was a summer camp for kids with psychological problems, ADHD, Asperger's syndrome, neurosis etc.

I met a boy from an orphanage run by nuns, he had ADHD he was then 14 years old while I was 12 years old. He said that he hates those nasty penguins in an orphanage because he got spanked for masturbation and possession of pornographic material :-)

And he really likes to masturbate, for that enjoys that is at a summer camp, I can do as much as he wishes :D moreover, he taught me how to masturbate, he said it was awesome fun and do not know why those nasty penguins see something wrong with that , although he said that in general the nuns did not beat anyone, and can even be nice, as long as one does not use bad words, smokes cigarettes, watching pornography or masturbate.

The nuns I know just wear regular clothes. Dresses, or shirts and blouses. Sister Jean wears a lot of business suits and Sister Judith Diane has a perm, frosted hair and pierced ears. The last nun I saw in a habit, other than Mother Angelica's bunch or their offshoot convent, was my Godmother, and also my kids Godmother. She wore a short blue habit that was a shirt and skirt and a short blue veil, but only at work. On the weekend she wore regular clothes. I didn't recognize her when I ran into her at the book store in jeans and a tshirt.

I watched a late night TV show of funny/strange video clips gathered from around the world: American guys busted for drunk driving doing dumb things while in police custody- that sorta thing.

But they had a fascinating clip of a police training film from the Islamic Republic of Iran. A training film for a female S.W.A.T. team!

It showed a two story house. Then a team of ladies in burquas descend upon the house on ropes from above, and then (armed to teeth) break into both floors of the house in seize control with stealth and speed. Like a dozen Uma Thurmans from the next installment of "Kill Bill". It was the funniest thing you ever saw!

heard penguin being slang for anyone in tuxedos occasionally but I never heard it being slang for nun till a couple years ago when I finally saw the 1st Blues Brothers movie. I went to a couple Catholic schools & one was run by a very hardassed nun.
