...but our old cat hates him. Even after getting both neutered (both are males - I know, dumb move, but my daughter wanted him) they get along like oil and water. Worse, my old cat - Kafka - has gotten a wild hare up his ass when he sees the new cat - Lovecraft - and has attacked both my daughter and me. He has especially ripped up my hands, and now I've got a nasty, painful infection. We've taken to keeping them in separate rooms, and trying to reintroduce them to one another, but with no success. Any suggestions how we can make Lovecraft and Kafka friends?

Had a similar problem, but its better now.
The passage of time, partial segregation and some nasty fights (plus injuries) has resulted in them sharing the same suntrap most days. Neither are neutered. I think they had to fight it out, but each had their own mini territory where they were fed separately so I think that helped.

I believe separation with brief introduction is the key.

It will likely be a territorial thing, how many litter trays do you have? Separating them can cause territorial issues also, for example if you keep one of them in your bedroom and the other one outside of your bedroom, then the one who doesn't get to be in there might be jealous.

Another thing you can and should do is regularly play with them until you wear them out. A toy which makes them jump around lots is good forl that. That way they'll be taking their agression out on some toy that it is acceptable to take it out on rather than each other, or you and your daughter! Furthermore you might be able to get them both playing together, which will help their relationship.

You may never be able to make them "friends" cats are a bit funny sometimes ^^ but you can at least hope for them to accept being in the same room as each other.

how about you try this: switch their blanket to get them used to each other's scent. take a cat candie/treat, rub it off on their fur, and then have the other cat sniff and then eat it to make them associate each other smell with something nice, something positive.

put them close to each other in their sleep.

put each on either side of you when you sit down and pat them, so they associate each other's company with something pleasant.

pay lots of attention to the old cat, Kafka, because he's jealous.

good luck, keep us posted on the situation.

You might also try rubbing one of the cats on the face (for example cheeks or nose) then go to the other cat and let it smell your hand, and if the cat doesn't seem scared gently touch its nose. Then do the same with the other cat. Repeat it every now and then.
Instead of your hand you can use a piece of cloth, such as a sock.

Cats must get used to each other smell to be comfortable with each other and while smell they create on other body parts(especially the "tail area") are territorial ones the one on face is a scent that says "I'm a friend".

You can also buy Feliway and use it in your house to "tell" both cats there is nothing to be afraid of.
