What unsual things did you make into toys? (What things did you play with that weren't actually meant to be used as a toy?)

Ex: I liked taking the "L"=shaped straws from box drinks, taping it to the side of my head with the short end near my mouth... and using it as a (oneway? lol) walkie-talkie. I would run around all day and whisper all kinds of crazy things to myself... pretending this or that.

For me, it was a stamp that said "File Copy" from my mom's work. I was stamping it on everything, even the furniture.

I got that idea from an old episode of the Simpsons where Bart was putting "Property of Bart Simpson" labels on everything.

I was 12 or 13 at the time.

Oh, and did you notice your post count?

Tim

Play-doh.

Barbie clothes were expensive and I thought the styles were too tacky, so I used Play-doh (over paper for skirts) to create new and interesting fashions.

I don't think Play-doh would be considered makeshift.

When I was kid I was obsessed with the vacuum cleaner hose. I would play with it for hours!

My sister and I would take clothing and twist and tie it into "dolls" and play with them for hours.

I remember making sharpend popcycle sticks. I'd then use them to draw and cut things. I'd also dismantle ant nests with them. I loved to see them rebuild.

I liked to make Power Rangers suits out of paper clips and paper grocery bags..Not sure if that is counted as a Makeshift Toy, but I was amused XD

I did all kinds of strange things as a tot XD

I made toys out of various things like coat hangers, old cups/bottles, and wood blocks

I didn't make makeshift toys, but my cat Samantha did. She liked to play with boxes, jewelry, and anything else she could find.

...empty boxes, empty paper towel holders...I liked cardboard.

Had a need for speed...I used to make sleds in the winter from layers of cardboard wrapped in black trash bags...I'd fly down the steepest hill I could find full tilt until they self-destructed or I did...

I used to play with warning label stickers my dad brought home from work. They were large and fluorescent and said things like "Danger", "Vacuum", "Highly Toxic", etc. I would stick them everywhere including wrapping them around trees which I got in trouble for. I was like 4 though.

Also I liked to make mud volcanoes then put baking soda, vinegar and red food coloring in the crater and watch it erupt.

Remember collecting acorns and the ones with the tops on them were like little hats. I would draw faces on the acorns with a fine tip felt marker. Or glue bits of cotton ball on the acorn and make a bearded old man.
