Out of curiosity I did a search on what cats taste like, and I inevitably ended up finding a bunch of people saying that it's wrong to eat cats or dogs.

I cannot see any logic behind this. With the exception of vegans and vegetarians, people generally have no problem with eating other domesticated animals. My best guess is that because cats and dogs are often kept as pets in many parts of the world, people empathise with them and therefore dislike the thought of them being used for food. That is purely an emotional response though.

I'd like to know what people here think about the subject.

I agree with you. If eating cats and/or dogs is wrong, then eating cows, chickens etc is also wrong. I do find the idea of eating cats or dogs gross simply because I'm not used to it.

I think it's all superficial, americans eat cows, pigs and chicken like it's no problem, and they're all ugly animals that stereotypically live in their own filth. But god forbid you eat a horse, cat, dog, or some other cute animal and you're a horrible person. It's a double standard no one addresses because.. nobody really does want to be the one to eat cats and dogs. It doesn't sound that appetizing anyway. 8O

I asked around my village. Which is funny, as it's not an inappropriate question from where I live. Although some of them discourages it. Usually drinking men prefer eating those served with beer.
Dogs rather tastes like a goat. Cats are more or less the same or 'more beefy'. I don't know which cooking they did, I wouldn't ask.

I never eaten either of those myself either. 8O I wouldn't eat any of them.

It's weird to eat carnivores in my opinion. Their ancestors were at the top of their respective food chains.

Cows, chickens, horses, sheep and other herbivores are OK to eat. I think it's even OK to eat insects, though I'd rather keep those critters out of my mouth, personally.

I'm going to separate myself from my very strong emotions on this for a moment, and simply try to state why it's viewed as wrong:
-humans have purposely and systematically bred cats and dogs to be members of the family (able to readfacial expressions and voice tones and sometimes trusted with infant humans), and they have been given as gifts among nobles (not for the delicacy of their flesh, but for their ability to fit on a lap)
-dogs and cats are pets that often live for years and reside indoors with their owners
-because dogs and cats are pets that often live for years and reside indoors with their owners, more people have come to know them as individuals with personalities, preferences, and intelligence

Because of all that, they are viewed as different from goats, cows, pigs, rabbits, ducks, turkeys, chickens, and so forth. Though you may notice that rabbit hasn't been a popular dish for a while now, except among those who hunt.

I am not sure I would even want to eat a cat for a dog just given the veterinary medicine they are given, and the possibility of parasites as well.

i wouldn't eat dog or cat, but if i wanted to eat them i wouldn't be worried about parasites as long as the meat was fully cooked.

Humans operate largely on evolutionary logic, and this manifests via emotions. So emotions, while not always optimal, are not entirely illogical when analyzed with respect to our evolutionary past. In western culture, cats and dogs are thought of as companions that tend to bring people happiness, via the reduction of loneliness and stress. The interact sufficiently and in a compatible enough manner with humans that enable humans to form bonds with them which are similar to the bonds they from with other humans. Thus, the contribution of the animal to the well being of the human owner, becomes similar to the positive contribution of humans to other humans.

Cats (which, according to a Malaysian friend of mine, are not good tasting, and thus not commonly consumed), are interesting in that they have brain structures similar to that of humans, and have many of the same types of brain cells, and in my personal experience, seem to possess a state of consciousness not unlike that of a human. As such, it's my personal opinion that people should not eat cats.

Dogs are similar to cats, however dogs as a species exist due to the existence of humans, and have essentially been created by us to view us as gods, so to speak. They will often risk their lives for us. As such, it seems it would be a betrayal to eat a dog, and so, in my opinion, people should not eat dogs.

I don't think I could ever eat dog, although I've threatened to use one of my dog's legs to make schweinshaxe. :P
I feel closer to and empathise dogs more so than people.

Good responses, everyone.

I don't think I'd try cat or dog myself (unless I was literally starving).
I don't have any moral objection to it, they just don't seem appetizing to me.

Yes, I've heard people say that before and I somewhat agree.
Oddly, I don't think many people feel that way about fish though.

You answered your own question. Cats and dogs are in most parts of the world as pets or are seen as friends (like for example the shepherd and his dog), therefore as Roger Scruton had formulated it we have (subconsciously) declared them honorary humans. And therefore are revolted by the idea of using them as a source of food.

This goes up to lesser extent for eating horse meat. Which tastes delicious by the way and in my experience easier to eat then beef. Alto it can be traced back to Church authorities outlawing a pagan practice.

it's all a culture thing. I happen to live in a culture where dogs, cats, monkeys, horses, and insects are not considered food animals. In other parts of the world dogs are considered filthy creatures and are not treated well. Even the Bible has a negative saying about dogs. Pigs are also so disliked both on and off the dinner table in The Middle East that even "Charlotte's Webb" isn't very popular. Cows in India are not killed for meat but people drink their milk, which according to vegans is still extremely wrong. Guinea pigs are a food animal in Peru, but here they're just cute little pets. This is a debate that will go on until the world ends, there are really no right or wrong answers, and people should just accept that.

I would not eat them here or there.
I would not eat them anywhere.

No, it's not so wrong to eat them.
Just don't beat them or mistreat them.
