Out of curiosity I did a search on what cats taste like, and I inevitably ended up finding a bunch of people saying that it's wrong to eat cats or dogs.
I cannot see any logic behind this. With the exception of vegans and vegetarians, people generally have no problem with eating other domesticated animals. My best guess is that because cats and dogs are often kept as pets in many parts of the world, people empathise with them and therefore dislike the thought of them being used for food. That is purely an emotional response though.
I'd like to know what people here think about the subject.
Humans operate largely on evolutionary logic, and this manifests via emotions. So emotions, while not always optimal, are not entirely illogical when analyzed with respect to our evolutionary past. In western culture, cats and dogs are thought of as companions that tend to bring people happiness, via the reduction of loneliness and stress. The interact sufficiently and in a compatible enough manner with humans that enable humans to form bonds with them which are similar to the bonds they from with other humans. Thus, the contribution of the animal to the well being of the human owner, becomes similar to the positive contribution of humans to other humans.
Cats (which, according to a Malaysian friend of mine, are not good tasting, and thus not commonly consumed), are interesting in that they have brain structures similar to that of humans, and have many of the same types of brain cells, and in my personal experience, seem to possess a state of consciousness not unlike that of a human. As such, it's my personal opinion that people should not eat cats.
Dogs are similar to cats, however dogs as a species exist due to the existence of humans, and have essentially been created by us to view us as gods, so to speak. They will often risk their lives for us. As such, it seems it would be a betrayal to eat a dog, and so, in my opinion, people should not eat dogs.
