"Honey Dipper" - A euphemism for a person who cleans out septic tanks.

I have the book Bart Simpson's Guide to Life. According to him, the worst jobs include being a leech farmer, a dog food cook, a radioactive waste collector, a septic tank repairman, a human sacrifice and a clone of your parents.

I was reading about now obsolete occupations on Wiki and among them was an actual leech collector. Back then doctors didn't usually get the leeches themselves, someone else was paid to do it. Sometimes they'd make a horse a wade into the water and let the leeches sucker on to the animal's legs, but most of the time the person would let the leeches bite their own legs, and then gather them. Leech collectors often suffered all kinds of infections and diseases as a result and must have been very desperate to earn the money.

Another was a whipping boy. They were normally raised along with a prince. If a prince misbehaved the servants would punish the other boy by whipping because only the king was allowed to punish his son but he usually wasn't around to do it. Often the prince was good friends with the whipping boy since he didn't get to be around other children much, so seeing the other boy whipped did may have been upsetting for him and encourage the prince not to misbehave. Maybe.

And of course, being a plague doctor must have been the worst of them all. 8O They used to wear these creepy masks that held herbs and stuff in them because they thought disease was cause by bad smells and inhaling a good smell would protect them, and they wore long coats and carried a long stick so they could examine someone or remove bedsheets without touching them. Actually I wouldn't mind having that last thing.

as a freshman in HS, i was once given the task of removing staples from the bulletin board downtown, something like this.

Image

the thing was caked in staples. i was armed with a screwdriver and a pair of pliers to remove one staple...fortunately it was the fall and near winter when i did that the most. and it wasn't paid...it was an unpaid, volunteer job so it probably doesn't count. only slightly infuriating. :P

though, it is very satisfying to see the thing bare, completely free from staples or paper bits.

My best friend in high school had a sister named Sheila who was a stripper in St. L ouis. Not in a strip club though, she was a stripper in a dirty book store. The way it worked was there were rooms in the back divided by plate glass. You paid your money and went in your side and closed the door and the stripper came in there on her side and gave you a show of whatever you asked for. There was glass between the stripper and the guy.

Now, while taking your clothes off and gyrating not four feet from a man doing things to himself sounds like the worst job ever, it's not. That title is held by the old man who works there and comes in to clean the glass off after the man leaves.

Really.

So, no matter how bad your job is, it's a thousand times better than his.

In a similar thread on another website (in a forum devoted to Star Trek), the worst possible job to have on a starship was "Holodeck Squeegee Technician".

Now we know why!

I used to see some pretty gross and nasty occupations on Dirty Jobs, like a road kill collector.

In my opinion the worst jobs are repetitive and boring but that is most of them.

I had originally thought working in the backyard of a doggie day car would be fun. Dogs are cool, right? Maybe a few dogs but not 20+ dogs who all have different degrees temperaments. The day care I worked at separated the yards in to big dogs, small dogs, and isolated dogs. Breaking up dog fights, picking up rancid poo, being bitten, being yelled at, dealing with rude co-workers, sitting around all day in the cold and heat. I just wanted to enjoy my time there but after having spent a month not being paid well for the work, I left. I know not all doggie day cares are run like this and do not wish this particular job on anyone.

Care assistant in a badly run nursing home, totally soul destroying and unbearably smelly too.
