There are threads that are miles long. They have millions of views and hundreds of thousands of replies. The longest ones just seem to continue. Start one of your own, but a little unsure about how it would be received? If it stays weeks after weeks with 10 views and 0 replies, can drive you beyond nuts. I hope you enjoy and contribute. PM's are accepted.

The most successful thread I've ever started so far was one I posted 60 seconds before the 'Old WP' closed down last November. It was entitled "Is This The Last Thread That Will Ever Be Created On The Old WP?". No-one was quick enough to reply before the shutdown (I should have made it into a game thread: 'Last Person To Post Before Old WP Closes Wins'), but there were about 20 replies when the site reopened for business. A bit pointless really, but that was sort of the point....... :?

Actually I was hoping no one would reply because it would have served my purpose better. Now I have the problem of whether to reply or not.

You're too subtlely ironic for your own good, Krabo. :)

It takes a Manchester guy to tell me that. Is it possible that the Finnish and the Northern English sense of humour are related? Are you sure you are not Scottish?

I'd identify primarily as British, though I'm also English with an element of Irish....

There are several Northern English brands of humour - Scouse (Liverpool) and Geordie (Newcastle) are probably the most famous, the Manc version less so, though we all eclipse London and the South in that department. You have to have a sense of humour to be able to live in Northern England these days.

You stay in a town with a possibly sexist name. Don't the feminists complain?

It's like history. The very name is distrusted by feminists who wish to hear herstory as well.

My longest thread is the "Ask a Q" thread in the "Off the Wall: Forum Games, Quizzes, Roleplaying, etc." section.

Interesting, Enviro, but could the 'Man' component not be taken to be 'Man' as in 'Mankind'?

And here's an article worth looking at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mamucium

In particular, note the following section, which I quote verbatim:

The name Mamucium is generally thought to represent a Latinisation of an original Brittonic name, either from mamm- ("breast", in reference to a "breast-like hill")[8][9] or from mamma ("mother", in reference to a local river goddess). Both meanings are preserved in languages derived from Common Brittonic, mam meaning "breast" in Irish and "mother" in Welsh.[10][11] The neuter suffix -ium is used in Latin placenames, particularly those representing Common Brittonic -ion (a genitive suffix denoting "place or city of ~"). The Welsh name for Manchester is Manceinion and presumably derives from the original Brittonic form.

I think some feminists might well approve of that! :D

Thank you Deep Hour, that was very interesting! :D

Maybe Mansfield has a similar history...

We won't worry about MANitoba or MANchuria just yet...

Some threads become part of history, never to see the light of day again while quite a number have been resurrected lately that were dormant for years, some last had responses in 2008 and someone brought them back to life.

When I was considerably younger, I though MANhattan was a Swedish colony of people who wore fancy hats.

I've started very few threads. The most successful is "Questions Only (In Any Language)", on the "Foreign Languages" forum, probably because it had to be created sooner or later and I hijacked the chance to do it. Then again, maybe not, because noöne's started a multilingual version of "Answers Only".

Most of the threads I've started got about 5 to 10 replies. My longest thread, which got almost 20 replies, was "Horror Stories" in the "Off the Wall" forum.
