I think there should be some kind of super-router that could be placed in the middle of the USA and gives off free wifi for everyone, with no password required. Let me know what you think!

Impractical, if only due to the inverse-square principle of radiative energy. The power necessary to maintain a connection from a thousand kilometers away would be on the order of a few hundred watts.

The carrier frequency would have to be in the terahertz range in order to accommodate bandwidth and speed. This would limit coverage to line-of-sight, thus requiring an antenna hundreds of kilometers tall.

Definitely impractical.

I think it would be more practical to put a super router in the middle of every city of the world, instead and not just in the middle of each country.

Why not install inexpensive, low-power routers every fifty meters or so on every street?

Oh, wait ...

That's already being done!

I'm pretty sure Seoul already has something like this. They have free wi-fi in pretty much every part of the city (even on the bus 8O).

I'm not sure how that works, though. :?

It's impractical, but the concepts behind it (providing everyone access to information) are intriguing.
