I was almost 4 years old, still living in western Washington. My mom had taken me to Bellevue, to my grandmother's house, because she had a doctor's appointment. Needless to say, with the attacks, I remember her getting a phone call saying that the appointment was cancelled due to the WTC/Pentagon attacks. I remember seeing NBC coverage of the attacks (afternoon, long after the towers fell) and seeing the replay of people running for their lives after the towers fell.
It wasn't until many years later that I saw the archived footage of the 2nd plane crash, and the towers falling. I've also acquired an 8-hour VHS full of CNN from 9/11. Keep in mind, Aaron Brown had started his first on-air day at CNN when the WTC was attacked. He was given a ton of awards for that! I will NEVER EVER THROW THIS TAPE AWAY. It is a piece of American history, and also world history as well.
I've also seen the jumpers, and they were shown on that day as well. Some of these people had no choice - die burning, or die jumping. Really, really hard to see.
I talked with two people at school who had some big stories to share from that day. One was a sub bus driver - he was on the police force, taking vacation leave and hunting in the mountains, when he got a phone call from the police department telling him about the WTC/Pentagon attacks. Needless to say, when plane traffic came back, he was straight off to Washington, DC.
The second person was a classmate whose uncle was in the Pentagon that day. He didn't die, thankfully. He was on the side that DIDN'T get hit.
I still believe in angels.
Yesterday, I observed EVERY moment of silence given. And I hope another 9/11-like attack NEVER happens again in America.
