This is way too trivial to belong in the Autism Discussion forum....

Can you 'see' the optical illusions in those Magic Eye books?

On each page is printed a repetitive speckled pattern, like TV 'snow' but in many different colours, and apparently if you hold the book close to your face, unfocus your eyes somehow and then slowly move the book away, you'll see some sort of 3-D optical illusion.

I have never been able to see them at all. These books were all the rage in the early 1990s, and I've often wondered whether everyone else could see them, or whether lots of people couldn't, but pretended they could just to look hip.

Yeah - I get so jealous of people who can see that. I've never been able to see them either, but then, I couldn't see in 3D until about 10 years old, for some reason. I could never see bumps on pregnant women, or long drops down and stuff, and I still can't see those 3D things. It's annoying - if only I could see them there might be a whole different world opening up!

My first one took such a long time to 'work'. I wasn't sure what I was looking for, and there was a lot of confusion with the colored snow, but I stressed and strained (it was on the wall at eye height) pushed up close, moved back and forth for a good 20 minutes, taking 'eye rest breaks' like the guy at the counter suggested.

and then, pop, there it was in all it's three d wonder. I still have to work to get it in focus when I see one, but I know the trick after struggling though that first one.

I've always had trouble getting these to work, but I have a lazy eye, so I always assumed that's what the problem was. I used to be able to see them when I was a kid and would practice a lot, but now I have a hard time seeing the pictures at all.

Haha, I love these. Some of them are really hard to see though, while some are easier... sometimes I have to take my glasses off to see them. It's really a matter of patience and technique, you do have to practice a bit... :x

I remember them when they were popular in the 1990s. The first time I saw one was when they appeared on cans of Pepsi, and I could just make out the shapes.

I was always one of the only people I knew who could see them.

I'd be like, "Oh, hey, it's a train." Then people would get mad that I could do it and they couldn't.

Good times.

http://www.magiceye.com/client/campbell.htm

here's a fun one!

Hold the center of the printed image right up to your nose. It should be blurry. Focus as though you are looking through the image into the distance. Very slowly move the image away from your face until the two squares above the image turn into three squares. If you see four squares, move the image farther away from your face until you see three squares. If you see one or two squares, start over!
When you clearly see three squares, hold the page still, and the hidden image will magically appear. Once you perceive the hidden image and depth, you can look around the entire 3D image. The longer you look, the clearer the illusion becomes. The farther away you hold the page, the deeper it becomes. Good Luck!
