They’re striking creatures, more muscular than the average tabby, with reddish-amber fur set off by bold dark stripes. The 58-year-old architect is the inventor of the Toyger, a house cat bred to look like a toy model of the largest member of the cat family. If this dedicated breeder can perfect her imitation tiger, some experts expect it to become one of the most sought-after cats in history—fetching prices as high as $4,000.

The perfect Toyger has small, round ears, a strong chin, a broad nose, and a long muzzle. Its coat has flecks of golden “glitter,” and its movements are “reminiscent of the big cats.”

At present, no Toyger embodies all of these attributes. With some 400 Toygers registered, most of them being bred by Sugden and about 20 colleagues worldwide, it could be several years before the cat looks amazingly like its 500-pound muse—Sugden hopes by 2010. But even imperfect specimens exude a certain jungle glamour. http://www.life.com/Life/article/0,2638 ... 02,00.htmlImageImageImage

Read my post about my bad kitten experience (it ran away...no forgiveness on my part!).

However, these cats look mighty good...could even imagine myself saving $4K for one.

better get off this thread before I get any ideas!! 8O

Aw, it's beautiful! It's a wonderful idea, too. I don't think I'd ever get a purebred animal of any kind though, just because if I'm going to adopt a pet then I would always rather save some unfortunate "mutt" from the animal shelter.

This wouldn't exactly be a "purebreed"... It's a mix of multiple breeds. As much a mutt as any other cat, just more sought after.

Isn't that how purebreds are made? People decide they like a certain set of traits, so they breed for them, and then it catches on, and eventually the breed is officially recognized by... whatever body recognizes such things and gives out purebred certificates and whatnot. This breed isn't done being created yet, but when it's done it will be a breed.

Anyway, I doubt I'd get a deliberately bred cat of any kind- not because I don't like them, but because I only have room for so many cats and I'd rather give the spot to one who needed it more desperately. Any cat you have to pay for is sought after or it wouldn't have a price tag. It's bound to find a home with someone. I'd rather take one that didn't have much hope.

Oops.. just read the definition. You're right.

Seems like a misnomer. :?
