Why does the singer pronounce "this" as "theess"?

"sweet dreams are made of theeeeeeeeeess, who am I to disagree, travel the world and the seven seas, everybody's looking for something".

It's proper grammar for set theory. Anyways I love Eurythmics, that song's also great cover/mixing fodder material.

These seem to be the definitive lyrics, though I've seen a transcript of the Marilyn Manson version which uses the word these.

I think it's sort of intended to predicate the song with a bit of metaphysics.

Perhaps theeeeeese introduces an abnormal quality to the lyrics. It is a dream, if the pronunciation isn't quite correct, it slightly takes you out of ones normal exceptions.

Always thought it was "these" too. And so did Marylin Manson when he covered the song.

Makes sense either way: a list of things, or one thing.

It was in the midst of a family crises with financial dimensions when I happened to answer the phone one morning. On the other end was a lady trying to sell me time-shares in waterfront condos a couple states away.

Here I was worried about becoming homeless, and I have to listen to a sale pitch from someone who thinks I can afford TWO homes!

I glanced at my music library on my computer screen- on impulse-put the headphones up next to the phone receiver and then clicked on the Eurythmics hit.

The sales lady then heard the Eurythmics sing my response to her pitch:"Sweet dreams are made of these...Everybody is looking for SOME thing....some of them want to use you, some of them want to be used...by you"

( dunno- somehow it seemed the perfect response to someone herself being used by her employer to try to use me by trying to sell me an impossible dream).

Then I put the phone receiver back to my ear. I heard the lady still laughing her ass off . She said" I have NEVER gotten THAT response before!"

I told a friend about the incident, and the friend scolded me by saying "you made a friend...you should have stayed in touch with her!"

Didnt think of that at the time. I guess cause I'm an aspie. Oh well.

I always thought it was "Sweet dreams are made of these", TOO----because "these" rhymes with "seas"!

It's a GREAT song----I love Annie!!
