My laptop was about 6 years old, and in truth, I hadn't been all that good to it and my wireless adaptor was failing...needless to say, I got in a temper and wrenched it, wrecking a usb port and my laptop went down. System recovery didn't fully work so I had a major, major meltdown over this... texted my mother a note basically saying I had nothing left now. Since it is my bday soon, she agreed to help out and I now have a new Toshiba...my God, the difference! I don't need a usb adaptor, it connects really fast through it's wi-fi and it is pretty damn cool. The only issue is I lost all my music and all my poetry and writing unless someone can recover my old one :( and the keyboard on this one is a lot smaller and harder to use. But still... I cannot complain. It is a dual core processor, so should serve me well... I need to somehow learn to control my anger issues before I wreck anything else.

That's a mouth full, but I get the gist of what you're saying.

That's great! About the new computer, I mean. You can look up some tech support/geek squad type deal in a phone book and ask how much it would cost for them to try to recover the data from your old hard drive.

ooo i have an idea, what u do is if u still have the old "dead" laptop, remove the harddrive and put old drive into toshiba, then go into the harddrive by going to my computer then finding the music files, then copy them to a cd or 3.5 inch floppy disk then when done transferring teh files u want off old drive, remove the dead laptop's harddrive and then reinstall the new drive that came with toshiba then reinsert the cd disk or the 3.5 inch floppy and then copy them to harddrive, by doing reverse going back into my computer, then click on the cd disk drive or (usually e) or the a 3.5 inch drive (usually a drive) then and open a and c and then high light everything in a and click and drag everything to drive c. now u should have the music and files that were fogotten that u wanted from laptop onto new laptop.

sorry to hear of the old one dying, sorry if above confused ya, good luck

I got two antiquated laptops.
Once the battery goes, that's it. May as well get a PC.

if you take the hard drive out of your old laptop you can get ide to usb converters very cheaply - either just a wire to hook into the back or a unit to plug your old drive in so you have it in a box.

then you can just plug it into your new laptop and remove your files.

This is the way to go. That was the idea I had as I was reading this thread.

I bet there is a computer store where you live with people that can take the hard drive out of your old laptop and put it in a USB enclosure for you after you buy it. I would, if I were you, just take the old laptop to one of the stores tell them you want to put the hard drive that is in the laptop into an external enclosure.

I like laptops. The battery on my last one failed only 3 months after getting it, but I managed with just the power supply...it wasn't a very good make tho...expensive, but not good. I have a Toshiba this time and had one before that served me well until I smacked the screen in a temper. This keypad is gonna take some major getting used to though. And the HD seems to be in two parts and some of it is taken up by Windows Vista.

Yeah, it's no terrible once the battery goes. Just plug it in.
I never understood how these people can use them on a beach (for example) all day though.
Couple of hours without the lead (unless it is brand new). They must be a lot better nowadays.
I always had IBMs ( refurbished - v. cheap).
I would recommend them. They have a nice pointer thingy.
I used a friends Toshiba once.
Horrid machine, the mouse square thing was just too bad to use.

Ah, well the mouse square/touchpad is pretty ok on this one and I am not fond of them at the best of times.
In the end, I am lucky to be back at all as I didn't have any money to replace my old one.
My mother did so because I reacted so extremely badly to losing my only contact with other people.

Now, if the screen is the only thing preventing you from getting your files, you can easily plug a screen into the back of your laptop and use that.
