What does feminism mean to you?

The word feminism has taken on so many meanings since the 1970s that if we try to discuss it, we're at cross-purposes. Is there anything that we all (or most) agree on?

What does feminism mean to you (long or short, as you please).

I'll start - feminism is a cause which, among other things, promotes the right to breastfeed in public.

Equality under the rule of law with males/transwhateveristhecurrentfad.

To me, feminism is about women wanting 'special treatment' or imagining that the world is out to get them.

I don't believe that's what it meant in the past. I don't believe that's what it's supposed to mean now. But I do believe that's what it is.

I believe in equal rights for all, but I would never call myself a feminist, because everyone I've ever met that openly claims to be feminist has actually wanted special treatment for being female, or has imagined problems that don't exist and attributed these to their sex/gender.

That's the best definition I've heard.

But there's a little problem with "rule of law" as you may have noticed by the news in the last few years.

How could we make it happen?

We had the Equal Rights Amendment in the 1970s in the US. That would have been good.

Feminism, to me, is equality between all genders under the law and in life.

It does not imply a sense of female superiority.

I'm still surprised that the ERA got defeated. Do you expect any hope from Hillary in this respect?

The concept of female superiority is not about men; it's about other women barefoot and enslaved in the kitchen.

It means a nuanced approach to gender equality.
Feminism started by aiming to establish basic human rights for women, and today its focused on the more subtle inequalities contained within social policy.

Feminism is simply a state of being, where men and women are equal partners in society.

Feminism's primary goal should be to protect women and children from male abuse and subjugation.

My aunt is a Feminist professor at McGuill. Her goals with feminism are basically to stop abuse against women and children, and also touches on maternal failure to protect the kids while they are being abused.

Her form of feminism is about helping women, children, and families.

It's not about ruining society, or tumblr, "I h8 men", or grrrrl power.

Men and women - Different, but equal.

beautiful women "already" get all the attention and special treatment from "both genders" not for being female, but for being beautiful.

personally i think this girl who dances in the video is extremely annoying, but i can understand why people think she is beautiful ( which is true) she is beautiful but annoying..

the thing is.. if i went there and said in the comments that "this girl is annoying", u know who will attack me? (guys/men) themselves will attack me.

a trend of thought that favors equality for all women.

Egalitarianism, on the other hand, is a trend of thought that favors equality for all people.

Standing up for women's rights & wanting fair & equal treatment.

Can you be more specific? Which rights? Fair and equal treatment re what, in particular?

Modern feminism is fascism.

equality "FOR" all women, not equality "OF" all women.
equality for all women means equality with men and women, not equality of all women with only other women.


they seem the same to me, and so i can unfortunately not see the difference (and incidentally am not interested in any attempt to point it out to me).

The right to make their own health care decisions & decide what to do with their own bodies. The right to display their breasts in public & breastfeed in public. Equal treatment in the workplace & earning the same amount as men for the same work.
