Why do people sound like it's socially unacceptable to wear shorts if it's raining but still hot?

So today is a really hot, sunny day and I am itching to wear my new shorts. But later a light rain shower is expected (but it will still be hot), so I can't wear my shorts at all because if I'm still out when it rains I will 'look silly' all of a sudden.

I like the feeling of rain on my legs. But because it says somewhere in the invisible fashion rule book "do not wear shorts if it's raining even if it's still really hot", I now have to go out in jeans and have hot legs all day.

What a sad society we live in.

I think everyone in the Pacific Northwest agrees with you. I've worn shorts in the rain many times and no one has said anything. I guess it rains so much here, it's the social norm to ignore it as much as possible.

I wonder the same. Legs are definitely more waterproof than clothes!

I wear shorts whatever the weather. I walked the dog to the shops a couple months ago, it was 5 degrees and absolutely chucking it down. I did have a waterproof jacket on but I was still absolutely soaked. A woman in the shop was paying and was speaking to the checkout person and the woman looked me up and down and then said to the checkout person it's awfully rainy and cold outside. Shorts are my outfit of choice, you do get funny looks when it's snowing.

:? I've never come across anyone who said that you couldn't wear shorts in the rain. What an odd thing to say.

I don't wear shorts when it's cold, but if it's summer I love to wear shorts, and a bit of rain shouldn't make a difference. Like someone else here said, skin is more waterproof than trousers.

A few people have said to me that I would look silly if I went out in shorts if it's raining. And others have jokingly commented on it, so it must be a thing.

It's only a thing if you make it a thing.

There.

I now make wearing shorts in the rain a thing.

Enjoy.

I wear shorts and either combat boots or gum boots /wellingtons in the rain all the time - I hate that thing where the hems of your pants extend past your shoes and absorb water, so you end up with wet pants up to your knees. Ick. Wearing shorts and either of those boots prevents that.

My late wife convinced me that I should be wearing shorts even though a lot of fashionistas say middle aged men shouldn't wear them.

I go barefoot all the time outside, whether it be grass, gravel, dirt, etc. All i know is I have flat feet (no arch), and shoes kill me if I'm in them too long, so i don't care about the norm since it would only physically punish me to follow it. People comment and make remarks, just ignore them, or find a self effacing joke about it if you dont want to offend them.

I like to wear the least amount of clothes possible when it's raining. Wet clothes suck.

Many people in the PNW wear a t-shirt and shorts during the summer no matter how rainy and or cold it is. Carrying an umbrella however is what gets frowned on.

Don't worry what others think is right for the rain, Joe!

Do your own thing.

Here in South Africa people wear what they like. You can go barefoot if you wish and no-one cares.

I've worn shorts in rain forever, I actually partake in jogging in a pair of blue hawaiian shorts which I've had for years, whether it's raining or not I try to get out there and jog in them, I also wear hat and scarf if it's scorching if I feel like wearing them on that day, I don't get what is acceptable with clothes or what isn't, I like to wear stuff regardless.
