I don't think this has anything to do with ASD, so I'm putting it in this subforum, but lately two of my coworkers have been giving me a lot of unsolicited advice on things unrelated to work. I understand they have good intentions, but honestly, the vast majority of their advice is idiotic, and I don't really understand why they think they're qualified to give advice on a lot of it anyway since I'm more successful than either of them are (in a lot of areas; not just work). What's most irritating of all is one of them seems to get upset when I blow her off, as if I'm being rude or offensive by not allowing her to run my life for me. We're all friends, so I'm trying to not let it bother me too much, but I guess I'm just frustrated and dumbfounded that I have to explain to them that they're not the boss of me, neither at work nor in my personal life.

Why do people do this? How do you handle? Does it irritate you as much as it does me?

Some people do that because they care & hope they are being helpful. Others do it because they want to assert their own agenda onto others.

Most of the unsolicited advice I got was from my parents & it came off as them being extremely critical of my disabilities & Aspie quirks. It p!ssed me off & caused me to have meltdowns with them.

Same. It almost always comes off as thoughtless, inconsiderate, and arrogant to me. Do you really think you know my life better than I do? Do you really think you know my wants and needs better than I do? Do you really think I need you to run my life for me? I can't believe these people.

I used to get a lot of useless advice when I was single, unemployed, or homeless. Now I give it.
