Hi Olive...How's everything going?

Sorry... I know nothing about French stitching.

Huh, only can figure out about handsewing a language but I guess I get the picture. French is my first language, and I was a teacher, to "special needs" (intuitive learner and teacher), not a title I like, but if I can help you, feel free, gladly.

It's a type of sewing used in bespoke tailoring and from what I've learned so far, you see your usual seam with tiny backspace stitches and then press it open and fold the raw edges under, press them, and then sew those pressed and folded edges to the fabric on each side. There is a lot more to it than just that, but the French seam was the first thing I learned. It's all very neat, and very precise and very sturdy and pretty.

I enjoy sewing and have made clothes but not many, and would like to make some nicer things. I enjoy sewing by hand and would like to learn fine sewing, like the good tailors use,and can't find a good manual on it and I live in the middle of nowhere without a car so classes are out of the question.

I can embroider well, so I know I can learn this if I can find a book or site or video course. I honestly would love to make some pretty dresses using it, and trim them with nice delicate embroidery or blackwork.

Most of the sewing sites I've found that even go into French handsewing are historical costume sites that suggest using it for certain areas of he garment, but without a sewing machine and with absolutely no desire to get one, I'm basically out of luck finding any instruction anywhere about sewing.

I don't understand some things about patterns and grain and some parts of putting certain areas of garments together, and everything I find either assumes I know what I'm doing or I'm just going to use a machine.

My ultimate goal is to make a lined dress out of natural fiber cloth but something good like a damask or silk, completely by hand and trim it with elaborate embroidery. Eventually I'd like to learn to make my own pattern as well. Something that would be as nice and well put together and beautiful as if I paid thousands to a pro for it. My dream dress is a jewel tone version of Elizabeth II's coronation dress, except tea length and with as much embroidery, but with different things embroidered.

It seems even hardcore SCA folks aren't into that level of sewing, and the professional high dollar seamstress aren't writing books to teach their craft.
