That's a good place to start reading a little about mass hysteria. The name and the cases described in the article refer to pathologies, but to me it seems like a special case of memes.

It's freaky how people will develop very real symptoms of an imaginary illness just because they think they might have it no matter how bizarre it sounds. Our bodies are sooo kind to us. :roll:

Memes can be very contagious, you've just got to look at religions and how particular religious beliefs tend to be endemic in various societies, from Christianity to Islam and Hinduism etc.
