Anyone here who was ever scared of vacuum cleaners?

As a kid, I had a fear of vacuums. The loud noise that they'd make when they were turned on.

When I was very young I was.
I used to go run and hide when my mom was vacuuming.

I was scared of them as a kid and hid with my dogs. When I was a teenager and my mom was vacuuming, I would let them hide in my room because I understood why they didn't them.

I still am.
But it depends on the vacuum cleaner. Some are alright, some are sort of painful/distracting but I can stand them and some give me a panic attack. It depends mostly of how loud the device is but there is also an underlying sound I can't stand, a kind of moan.

I had to evacuate whenever my mom used our old vacuum cleaner. Then it broke (God bless!) and she bought another one - this one I can stand but still makes me clumsy when it is in the same room so I have to ask my mom to vacuum my room. But at least I don't have to escape to the other end of the house - I simply sit down so I don't hurt myself due to the clumsiness/overload it causes and wait till it's over.
I wish she bought the silent, more expensive one. But she bought the cheapest I could stand without covering my ears(I went to shop with her and we tried some vacuum cleaners because there were vacuum caused meltdowns in my home with the broken one).

I have no problem with my grandma's about 30 year old vacuum cleaner. When I was a kid I even used to ride it when she was vacuuming. Its sound isn't distracting at all despite it not being silent - because the sound seems to have a pattern. Well... I guess a vacuum cleaner working for 30 years must be really well made so no wonder it doesn't make scary/weird/random sounds.

No. I was always fascinated by the way the hose sucked up things and how easily they could they could be drawn into an anthropomorphic creature in cartoons. In fact one time when I was younger and using my parent's hose vacuum I started giving it objects to suck down just for fun, like toilet paper. I loved the slurping sounds it made when it inhaled a long piece of TP.

It's a wonder I didn't get in trouble for wasting TP and possibly clogging the vacuum.

Yes. I still hate the noise, but I have hardwood floors now.

I wasn't afraid of the sound but always feared I might suck something up in it that wouldn't come out (the bottom of a curtain, shoelaces, etc).

I thought the vacuum cleaner sounded angry when the hose got stuck. I’m not sure whether this was before or after my parents told me the motor would burn if it was kept on too long without enough air flowing.

I've always hated the noise and I used to cry when my mom would vacuum because I was afraid the vacuum would eat me.

I hated the noise as a kid but I'm not bothered by it anymore. I've worked as a custodian & around machines louder than vacuums

I'm still afraid of vacuum cleaners. It's not just the sound, it's always the fear that someone is going to try to vacuum me up. I know that won't happen, but I don't like the feel of it on my feet. When I was a kid though, I really did think it would vacuum me up. My dad once pretended to vacuum my mom up and joked about vacuuming the cat up. The sound is not that pleasant either. I often will live the house when my dad vacuums.

I used to tear pieces of paper up and put them on the floor so it could eat them.

The only time I have been scared of a vacuum cleaner was a few weeks ago, when I was trying to find out if the handheld one was charged enough for me to use it. We have two, and the last few times I used them, their battery died before I could finish cleaning the floor. I held it near my ear when I switched it on so I could see if it sounded like it was charged enough. It was, so it was loud. There was something stuck in it, which made it louder than it would have been. It took about an hour for my heart to go back to normal.

Yes! Hated and feared the vacuum cleaner when my mother vacuumed. I no longer have a problem, I even use one in my work, albeit with earplugs to protect my hearing.

I found that this plus hating and fearing the noise of the toilet flushing were childhood horrors that I grew out of.

Yes, the noise would really bother me and it still does. I have a small vacuum cleaner because it's not as noisy.

mee too. my 6th grade teacher embarrassed me in front of the whole class by telling them that my mom told him I was afraid of the sound of the vacuum cleaner. it was just such a harsh sound.
