"four" is said much more "spread out" than "for." "Four's" vowel is more of a dipththong.

I would pronounce "four" the way it's supposed to be pronounced and "for" more like "fer". So no, it wouldn't be awkward.

It depends how upmarket I'm trying to sound.... In my "polite" accent, the only difference between the words is that "four" is emphasised. It sounds a bit like a stutter: "Table four-four, my good man." In my everyday accent, no trouble: "Tehbul fuh FAW, mate." Perfectly clear!
