I don't agree, at least not from what I've experienced.

but my good friend lived in Japan for 6 months and later told me that he never thought that he will one day be subject to such discrimination because of his race (he is a pale, ginger Irishman) as he did in Japan...

I don't know that it would be fair to say that ALL or MOST or even SOME japanese people are routinely rude to Westerners.
It's too broad of a generalization. Like saying all Westerners are obese pigs.

Just remember that when traveling to other countries, you are a guest and are obligated to know, understand and adhere to the customs of the country you're visitng. No matter how you personally feel about the customs and mannerisms it is simply respectful to blend into the new surroundings as best as possible and always appear humble.

Being a blonde-haired, blue-eyed American, I'm a little afraid to go to Japan myself. I'm not sure I could handle discrimination, even though visiting Japan has been a secret dream of mine ever since I was little.

Though perhaps my fears are unfounded; I remember when some foreign exchange college students from Japan came to my second grade class to talk about their culture, they all admired my hair and wanted to touch it.

The Jap side of my family more or less brushes me off because I'm a halfbreed that lives in the USA.

The (very limited quantity of) Japanese people I've ever met have been very respectful.

I more or less agree with this. Though I'm very sympathetic to "foreigners" since I was one myself when I moved to Ireland from Canada, the truth is that most people don't like clueless tourists and the United States might overall be one of the friendliest places to visit in this regard. Be prepared for a cool reception from some corners wherever you go.

I would like to go to Japan aswell, but I do wonder, well technicaly Australia is not realy western, we count as an area of Australasia, I think we have a fairly large Japanese population anyway. The transfer students I would see from school didnt realy react so bad, but that might be that they realy wanted to come. Maybe we should look at what they often put Americans in anime and some movies like to have idea of what they might think, from what I have seen often as war crazy generals or often arrogent gangsters. But that is not every media I know, hey we are often shown as being like Steve Irwin or Crocodile Dundee.

Yup, and the fact that the world over can comment with such a derogatory term, only is further proof as to the damaging aspects of the Obesity Hysteria. It's no different than calling someone who is of an ethnicity a derogatory word, except that people think they can talk about fat people like they're things instead of people, due to the prevailing misconception that being fat is a choice.

I think you really should be asking yourself if they really are rude or if they just appear rude due to cultural difference.

There is a definate condescendency by Japanese towards Non-Japanese, but you really have to get to know them to see it. They are the world-class masters of passive-aggressive bigotry.

At least American bigots tend to be more openly aggressive, so they're easy to spot.

Gauging Japanese attitudes to foreigners by anime to me sounds akin to gauging Indian attitudes to foreigners by Bollywood.

I was just saying to look at their pop culture that might offer some idea of what they think about other cultures.

I've lived in Misawa, Japan off base for a year(1988) though we did live close to the base, most of the people were kind and respectful even helpful, though I'd catch some of the school kids pointing at us and laughing. Damn kids everywhere are about the same.

... and American attitudes to foreigners by Hollywood.

A person does not have to be American, or caucasian, or male, or middle-aged, or straight, or religious, or conservative, or wealthy, or ... whatever to be a bigot.

Bigotry is as bigotry does.
