Something I've wondered about dishwashers. Do dishwashers have power cords that plug into an outlet or are they just wired directly to the electricity?

This is what some guy on one of those answer my question sites answered (he's designated an expert if that makes you feel better):

Quote:
Dishwashers do NOT come with power cords. If you have an electrical outlet installed under the counter top where the dishwasher will be installed then a power cord can be connected to the dishwasher and then plugged into the receptacle. If you do not have an electrical outlet then a power cord will not be needed and the power supply can be connected directly to the dishwasher.

I didn't know that, would have guessed yes, but I guess either way works.

As the link wozeree posted implied, there is no power cord. Usually there is a junction box inside of the cabinet that is next to the dishwasher (which is usually the sink cabinet).

The one I installed did come with a power cord, but it didn't have a 3-prong plug on the end if that's what you mean. Since there was no dishwasher there before I also had to run a line from the breaker box and install a junction box under the counter.

Yeah. What is was wondering is, do dishwashers plug into an outlet or are they connected directly to the power supply? I guess it's the latter, at least in most cases.

The last dishwasher I saw had some type of cord, but it was around her waist and not plugged into anything. She also was wearing a white hat if that is of any assistance.

There are 3 types of common residential dish washers. The portable, the duel type and the under cabinet. The first type always comes with a cord, the second can be sold ether way the third are built with a provision for romex /bx cable to be hard wired to a junction box under the machine in most cases. The second type has a top that can be taken off for permanent installation under the counter. Home this helps.

As a landlord, I've installed a dozen or so dishwashers in the past 10 years, and when they come out of the box new, there is no cord. Just a box with the connections. However, most houses in the USA built in the past 20 years, have a dedicated outlet for the dishwasher under the sink, and you remove the cord from the old dishwasher and wire it up in the box of the new one, or get a new cord if the old one is worn. In many states and counties, you are not allowed do hardwire a dishwasher into the wiring of the house. You mist install a cord, and plug it in. That way, it can be unplugged for servicing, and the service person can see that it's unplugged, and not run the risk of somebody outside, turning a circuit breaker back on; not knowing that there is someone working on the dishwasher. Makes sense, IMHO.

Your rite kx250rider. My dad does carpentry & someone(usually electrician) installs a special outlet in the cabinet where the washer is going to be put; my dad built our house(I moved out a year ago so it technically isn't ours or mine now) & he installed the outlet latter because he had built it with space for the washer but didn't get one till I was little & the cords for the washers can have different plug designs so it was better for him to wait to install the outlet when it was needed. We replaced it 1ce & had to get them serviced or pipes behind them checked out afew times. I worked as a dishwasher at IHOP & the professional dish washing machine had a power-cord.

I know for a fact that dishwashers do NOT have power cords.

They have apron strings instead.

The Dishwashers in NZ, do in fact have power cords, but if you're curious, some high power washing machines, and quite a lot of modern tumbledryers, are wired with a special high power outlet, which is essentially a direct connection, to the mains board.

The one here doesn't, it's caffeine powered ;-) I need two pots of coffee in the morning, then coke or ice tea all day. But I get the cleaning done usually lol.

As for our actual dishwasher, I don't know whats wrong with it. It's been broken for about 5 years now, about 1 year after it was installed. Maybe my son will look at it, he really enjoys fixing things and works on lots of different things, whereas my husband doesn't like to fix things and only knows electrical stuff and a very few basic home repair skills.

My dishwasher came with a powercord attached. But it's a countertop one that you have to attach to the kitchen sink faucet for water. Designed to hold 4 place settings worth of dishware.

The ones I've seen have power cords, but that is probably a European norm. I've no idea about America and their low voltage (115V) appliances. Mine has a power cord anyway.

The ones at the cafe had two arms and came in male and female models.
